The structure of the citadel was built of rubble stones and sandstone rock. In the middle of the fortress is a courtyard surrounded by different buildings, each of them having a specific purpose.

The elegant and impressive fortress was built in the 14th century, during the time of Peter I, and was fortified in the 15th century by Stephen the Great, who ordered that the walls of the fortress be raised by 6-7 m and crenellations and narrow windows were built, through which the defenders of the fortress could watch over possible enemies.

This fortress was built during the consolidation of the medieval state of Moldova, during the time of Petru Musat for defense against the Ottomans and was fortified in the 15th century. The glory period of the medieval fortress corresponds to the reign of Stefan the Great (1457-1504). , the exceptional military leader who understands the role of fortifications in the defense of the country, Moldova being defended by a strong defensive system, he raised the old walls of the fortress and in 1476 Neamț Citadel faced the siege imposed by Mohammed II.

Since 1718, the citadel has been a very important and special historical objective for the city of Târgul Neamț, but over time it has deteriorated, but in 1866 it was declared a historical monument and only in 1968 did the work to consolidate the walls begin.
