Horezu Monastery (also known as Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox nunnery located in the historical region of Valahia Mică in Vâlcea.
At the foot of the Căpățânii mountains, a massive mountain range of the Transylvanian Alps, on the territory of the Romani de Jos village, the monastery is located about three kilometers (airline) north of the small town of Horezu.
The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian huhurezi) that live in the surrounding forests of the monastery probably gave the name of the place. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 until 1862 it was a human monastery. After the monks were transferred to your Bistrita, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.
On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The exterior of a smaller wall surrounded the entire estate of the monastery with its hermits. The second consists of three parts of different buildings and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is in the south part of a bell tower, armored with a solid wooden steel gate. The church of the monastery of Saints Emperors Constantine and Helen, built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape, is 32 meters long and was built between 1693 and 1697. Brâncoveanu, however, did not fulfill its purpose and, therefore, was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and wrapped in gold.
The square chapel with octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697. The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

It is located on a rock formation in the Almaj Mountains on the banks of the Danube, close to the municipality of Dubova (Mehedinti district) in the Iron Gate Nature Park (Parcul Natural Portile de Fier).

Mud volcanoes (Roman: Muddy volcanoes) are located in the municipality of Berca in the district of Buzău. In 1924, the area of 30 km ² was declared a nature reserve.
The main attraction of the reservation are the small mud volcanoes that have a height of a few centimeters / meters, which is cold volcanism. Volcanoes are made of gases that rise from about 3,000 m deep through layers of clay and contain water. At the surface of the earth, the mud dries up and forms structures that resemble a volcano.

Eichenthal (in Romanian: Sălbăgelu Nou) is located in Caraș-Severin County in the historical region of Banat. In 1894, the village was settled by German colonists from various German villages in Banat and the Banat Mountains, and it remained a German village until the 1970s.
From then on, the Germans migrated to the cities and to Germany. Afterwards, Ukrainians from Maramureș (a region in northern Romania) settled in the village. The small former Catholic church is now Ukrainian Orthodox. There are no Germans living in the village anymore. However, most of the oaks that gave the village its name still stand.

The gorges are located in the municipality of Banita in Hunedoara County and take place along the high limestone walls.
They are about 300 meters long and have been dug by deep water in limestone. On quiet summer days, they can be visited, waterproof shoes are a necessity, because the path in the keys also leads through the water.
The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and shows how the water eroded the rock. In many places, the rocks form a roof, which has been formed by horizontal erosion depending on the current for hundreds of years.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County, in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.
Built in its current form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, it used materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. The church interior features 15th-century frescoes depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian attire.
Historians suggest the site once housed a Dacian temple for the god Zamolxis, later turned into a Roman temple for Mars. The church’s origins trace back to the 4th century, making it the oldest church in Romania and Southeast Europe.

We continue to work on our new information section (sorted by regions in Romania) about camping, motorhome travel, and more.
https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de/en/uir/camping-in-romania-en/
Motorhomes and wild camping | Many things are possible, not everything is allowed, and some things can be quite dangerous. Romania’s Carpathian Mountains are home to brown bears, there are many national parks and protected areas, and many activities are forbidden However, if you don’t want to stay at an official campsite, please ask in the local area. There is usually a possibility to park on private property (with permission), in front of a guesthouse (with permission), or elsewhere. But please, always ask… local residents can also inform you about possible dangers (e.g., bears).
Our online list still lacks a lot of information, so we kindly ask for your help to complete this overview (in German, Romanian, and English).
You can submit new places for free directly on the site, and after a quick review, we will publish them online. Many thanks in advance to all the contributors
There is also a small rating system where you can share your impressions. Please always choose appropriate wording. Thank you.

Certainly one of the oldest monasteries in Romania is the Corbii de Piatră Monastery.
It is located in the village of Jgheaburi, Corbi commune, Argeș County. It was built in a cave complex in 1512 during the reign of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521).
The monastery church is carved into the rock (sandstone). Next to the church, also carved into the rock, is the monastery’s refectory, a room hewn in stone, which according to tradition was used by Neagoe Basarab as an open-air courtroom for public hearings. The monastery is located about 400 meters from the center of Corbi, on the left bank of the Doamnei River. The rock church itself was carved into a massive rock wall about 30 meters high and 14.5 meters long.

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brașov County, Transylvania.
It lies northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (in German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (in German: Schäßburg). Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons, plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized both by its fortified church and by the village structure shaped by Saxon farmsteads.
The village was founded at the end of the 12th century by Transylvanian Saxons and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. At the northwestern end of the village stands the fortified church.
In the 12th century, before the arrival of the German settlers, the Székelys (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. In the 13th century, the church was expanded. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a defensive wall with towers was built.

On the night from Holy Saturday to Easter Sunday, in Romania, people of all ages go to church with a candle in hand. In addition to attending the service, every worshipper carries a lit candle home at midnight, as a sign of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Once home, they use the candle soot to draw a cross above the front door.
Bread and red eggs are also brought to the Easter service to be blessed. The art of decorating eggs is a tradition and part of the history in many regions of Romania.

Feldorf (in Romanian Filitelnic) is located in Mureș County, in a side valley of the Little Târnava River.
Until autumn 1944, it was an almost entirely German village. The population had to flee, and only a small part returned after the end of the war. The Evangelical fortified church was supposed to be demolished a few years ago due to the risk of collapse. A private initiative from abroad prevented this. Since then, restoration work has been taking place, also with the help of foreign students. The village has largely preserved its original Saxon architectural style.

Certainly one of the oldest monasteries in Romania is the Corbii de Piatra Monastery.
It is located in the village of Jgheaburi, Corbi commune, in Argeș County. It was built within a cave complex in 1512 during the reign of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521).
The church of the monastery is carved into the rock (sandstone). Next to the church, also carved into the rock, is the monastery’s dining hall, a chamber that, according to tradition, was used by Neagoe Basarab as an open-air courtroom for public trials. The monastery is about 400 meters from the center of Corbi, on the left bank of the Doamnei River. The rock church itself was excavated into a massive rock wall about 30 meters high and 14.5 meters long.

The Moldavian monasteries are located in the region of Bukovina (northeastern Romania) and were built in the 15th and 16th centuries, during the former Principality of Moldavia.
The monasteries are famous for their stunning frescoes. Many of the buildings are attributed to Stephen the Great, who is said to have founded a monastery for every battle he won. Eight of these monasteries are part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
What makes the Moldavian monasteries special is their uniquely colorful painting, unparalleled in Europe. The monks wanted to convey the teachings of the Holy Scripture to common people who could neither read nor write. Thus, they used the inner walls, facades, and defensive walls of the monasteries to illustrate scenes and parables from the Bible through colorful drawings, paintings, and frescoes. These are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

It took 10 years, one million US dollars and 12 sculptors to create it … and it was not commissioned by the Dacian king himself, as was perhaps thought, but by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004.

Photos from past Augusts. It was hot, very hot (between 32 and 38 degrees, sometimes even more), and the water was wonderfully refreshing.
Our destination was once again Vama Veche , the southernmost spot on Romania’s Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. Even now, the weather is gradually warming up again, and we’re already dreaming of our summer holiday at the Black Sea
The Romanian seaside stretches for about 70 km and includes, besides Vama Veche, towns like Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Costinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia, and more. There are also long (and deserted) beaches in the Danube Delta region, between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe.
Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd, known as the party zone – Romania’s version of “Malle” – with around 3,000 to 4,000 visitors on weekends and loud music around the clock.

Biertan is part of the first German-Saxon settlements and was already mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources: 1402).
Like every Saxon settlement, it stands out for its row of houses around a central square, above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate (episcopal see of the Evangelical Church of A.B.), which favored the construction of one of the largest farming communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. Beautiful pictures of the ‘Happy Cemetery’ and the museum / workshop of Sapanta (Maramures County), which we received today from Mr Alexander Laszlo. Thank you very much for this.
The ‘Happy Cemetery’ is located about 18 kilometres west of Sighetu Marmatiei and is one of the most visited sights in the Maramures region.
The crosses, which were painted by local craftsmen, are vivid and predominantly blue in colour.
The idea for this cemetery was conceived in 1935 by the wood sculptor Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has a carved image in the upper part, depicting a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, humorous, short poems or rhymed texts describe the life of the person buried there.

The village of Dedrad, or Deutsch-Zepling in German, is located in the district of Mures in northern Transylvania.
Until 1944, the village was mainly inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons, who had to flee westwards as a result of the Second World War. Some of them returned in 1945. From the 1970s onwards, most of the Germans resettled in Germany. Today, there is still a small German Protestant congregation that regularly worships in the beautifully renovated church.

Hunedoara Castle ( also known as Hunedoara Castle ) is one of the most important non-ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.
The rock castle was built on the remains of a fortification from the 14th century. Built and located in the southwestern part of Hunedoara ( German name: Eisenmarkt ) in western Romania.
The listed castle bears many other names ( Corvin Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle ) which can be traced to its location or that of its owners.
The statesman and leader of the Hungarian army, Johann Hunyadi, rebuilt an existing fortification after 1440 to become the ancestral castle of Hunyadis. In the second phase of construction, the castle was expanded in 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the 19th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen made other major changes to the building. Therefore, the current castle has a mixture of different architectural styles.
The castle has been in Austria since 1724 and has been owned by the Romanian state since 1918. In addition to the attraction for tourists, the castle is ( and has been used as a background for a variety of Romanian and international film productions. The castle now houses a museum.

This church / fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (Biertan in German, Berethalom in Hungarian) in the district of Sibiu in Transylvania. Biertan belongs to the first German-Saxon settlements and was mentioned in documents as early as 1398 (other sources: 1402).
Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterised by a row of houses built around a central square above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which favoured the construction of one of the largest agricultural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure of Romania, definitely worth a visit.

The Oravița – Lisava – Anina railway line (in Caraș-Severin County) was inaugurated on 15 December 1863 as the first mountain railway on the present-day territory of Romania.
Construction began in 1861 and was a challenging engineering feat, as the railway runs through a mountainous region (the western part of the Banat Mountains). The 33.4 km railway line features no fewer than 14 tunnels with a total length of 2.1 km and nine (9) viaducts.
The route starts in Oravița and then ascends to the plateau of the Semenic Mountains massif on a path where no other road exists.

If you travel on the road (E671) from Timisoara to Arad, you will pass the commune of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.
The two churches are very large for such a small community. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture and in other pictures).
The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After being sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of “Bulgarian-Bavarians” from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in various parts of the Banat Plain. On 1 August 1744, Vinga was granted the status of a town with a magistrate and various privileges by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

We follow the Zitzmann family through Romania, who not only allowed us to use the pictures from their trip (late September 2023) but also to share their experiences and stories. Thank you
“Romania Day 16, we drive about 90 km over the Transfagarasan Pass, which is only open for four months a year—the rest of the year, the high road is closed due to the long winter. Many media outlets refer to it as the ‘most beautiful’ mountain road. It is unique, as you can see wild bears there. The mountain road was built in just 4.5 years, and the highest point is 2,042 meters high.
On the orders of the then head of state Nicolae Ceaușescu (dictator), the high road was intended not only for military purposes, due to the tense relations with the Soviet Union after the events of the Prague Spring, but also to serve a tourist purpose. This road connection through the high mountains was meant to facilitate rapid troop movements. After four and a half years of construction, the road was opened on September 20, 1974. “

Horezu Monastery (also known as Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox nunnery located in the historical region of Oltenia, Valcea County.
At the foot of the Căpățânii Mountains, part of the Southern Carpathians, the monastery lies about 3 km north of the small town of Horezu, in the village of Romanii de Jos.
The monastery likely owes its name to the nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian: huhurezi) inhabiting the surrounding forests. It was founded in 1692 by Wallachian ruler Constantin Brâncoveanu and completed in 1709. Originally a male monastery, it became a nunnery in 1862. The complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a protected historical monument.
The hilltop monastery is surrounded by two fortifications: a smaller outer wall enclosing the entire estate, and a second defensive structure made up of buildings and a wall to the east. The main entrance is on the south side through a bell tower with a steel-armored wooden gate. The cross-shaped main church “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena”, built between 1693 and 1697, is 32 meters long and 14 meters high. In its porch are several graves, including a marble one with a carved cover intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, which was never used. The large iconostasis is carved from linden wood and gilded.
The square chapel with an octagonal tower lies west of the church and was built in 1697. Its frescoes, painted between 1705 and 1706, are still well preserved.

Valea Viilor (Wurmloch in German) is a commune in Sibiu County, Transylvania Region.
Valea Viilor, originally Vorumloc, was probably first mentioned under the Hungarian name Baromlak in 1224 (possibly 1305). Transylvania-Saxon Hörigendorf, which was originally held by the nobility, was later able to join the see of Mediascher and thus become free. Until 1964, the local in Romania was run under the German derivative name Vorumloc, then renamed “Valea Viilor” (in German: valea viilor).
In 1850 the proportion of Germans was over 65% and in 1977 over 50%. Today, only about 1-2% of the inhabitants are German.
