The Bear’s Cave (in German Bärenhöhle) is one of the most famous caves in Romania. It is located in the northwest of Transylvania / Romania, approximately 75 kilometers southeast of the county town of Oradea in Bihor County.
The Bear’s Cave (municipality of Pietroasa, village of Chiscau) was discovered by chance in 1975 and showcases an impressive world of stalactites in its beauty and variety of forms. The highlight of each tour is the visit to a fossilized skeleton of a cave bear (Ursus spelaeus). This skeleton is fully preserved and has been there for about 15,000 years.

The small town of Sulina is located at the mouth of the Danube into the Black Sea, in the Danube Delta.
https://discover-sulina.com | https://urlaub-im-donaudelta.de
The town can only be reached by boat / ships, but it is a dreamlike place for vacations, nature, tour offers into the delta, relaxation, and various activities (e.g., kayak tours on the Danube or in the Danube Delta) almost all year round.
We thank Sulina fabuloasa for the permission to use these pictures.

The Sulina Waterfront (promenade) is approximately five (5) km long. It starts at Mile 2 and, alongside the typical houses in blue and green, the path is interrupted by new constructions (mostly hotels and accommodations) until reaching the old center of the town.
https://discover-sulina.com | https://willkommen-in-rumänien.de/
Also, right in the town, you encounter horses that belong to no one and move freely as they please. There are few cars (as they must be brought to Sulina by ship), the clocks run slower here … and that’s a good thing!
To reach Sulina, it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes by a small boat (max. 12 people, up to 80 km/h!!) from Tulcea. This ride must be experienced at least once.

In line with the main character of the book “Dracula” by Irish author Bram Stoker, Bran Castle is regarded as the “home” of this vampire. Medias (in German Mediasch, in Hungarian Medgyes and in Saxon Medwesch, Medves or Meddesch) is a municipality in the county of Sibiu in Transylvania. It consists of the town of Medias and the village of Ighisu Nou (German: Sächsisch-Eibesdorf) and has around 55,000 inhabitants. After Sibiu, Medias is the second largest and most populous town in the county of Sibiu.
In Roman times, there was a Roman fortress called “Media” on the site of today’s city. Later, in the 12th to 13th centuries, the Hungarian kings settled German and Western European settlers, the so-called Transylvanian Saxons, in this area of Medias.

Around 140 years ago, Timișoara / Temeswar already proved its uniqueness as a city in Europe.
On 12 November 1884, nearly 60 kilometers of streets in the city center of Timișoara were electrically illuminated with 731 lamps*. At that time, it was a record in Europe and the second place in the world after New York.
* The number of lamps and kilometers are based on various sources with the same statement found online.
** Of course, the lamps were smaller than the one shown in the picture. This lamp was placed only as a reminder and is no longer used for lighting in Timișoara.

We continue to work on our new information section (sorted by regions in Romania) about camping, motorhome travel, and more.
https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de/en/uir/camping-in-romania-en/
Motorhomes and wild camping | Many things are possible, not everything is allowed, and some things can be quite dangerous. Romania’s Carpathian Mountains are home to brown bears, there are many national parks and protected areas, and many activities are forbidden However, if you don’t want to stay at an official campsite, please ask in the local area. There is usually a possibility to park on private property (with permission), in front of a guesthouse (with permission), or elsewhere. But please, always ask… local residents can also inform you about possible dangers (e.g., bears).
Our online list still lacks a lot of information, so we kindly ask for your help to complete this overview (in German, Romanian, and English).
You can submit new places for free directly on the site, and after a quick review, we will publish them online. Many thanks in advance to all the contributors
There is also a small rating system where you can share your impressions. Please always choose appropriate wording. Thank you.

The Cheile Turzii (also called Thorenburger Schlucht in German) is a limestone gorge in the Trascau Mountains, on the eastern edge of the Western Carpathians in western Transylvania, Romania, not far from the city of Turda (Thorenburg).
The gorge, about two kilometers long, is traversed by the Hasdate stream, which has carved its way into the limestone here. On both sides, the gorge is bordered by steep walls about 300 meters high, in which several caves are found. As early as 1938, the gorge was declared a nature reserve due to the presence of over 1,000 plant species, some of them alpine. On an area of 176 hectares, about 70 species of birds, fish, amphibians, and some mammals such as foxes, weasels, martens, and wild boars live here.

As you drive through the country, you can see a multitude of herds of sheep, goats and also cattle, guarded by shepherds and their dogs.
Here you will find the last nomads in Europe, often moving their herds hundreds of kilometers from winter pastures to summer pastures and back. More than 3,000 wolves still roam Romania in the border regions with Ukraine and represent a permanent threat to these herds.
In the Țarcu Mountains (in the south-west of Romania) you can even admire a herd of free European bison, extinct, but reintroduced there a few years ago by the WWF.

The main attraction of the reservation are the small mud volcanoes that have a height of a few centimeters / meters, which is cold volcanism. Volcanoes are made of gases that rise from about 3,000 m deep through layers of clay and contain water. At the surface of the earth, the mud dries up and forms structures that resemble a volcano.

Valea Viilor (Wurmloch in German) is a commune in Sibiu County, Transylvania Region.
Valea Viilor, originally Vorumloc, was probably first mentioned under the Hungarian name Baromlak in 1224 (possibly 1305). Transylvania-Saxon Hörigendorf, which was originally held by the nobility, was later able to join the see of Mediascher and thus become free. Until 1964, the local in Romania was run under the German derivative name Vorumloc, then renamed “Valea Viilor” (in German: valea viilor).
In 1850 the proportion of Germans was over 65% and in 1977 over 50%. Today, only about 1-2% of the inhabitants are German.

We are following the Zitzmann family through Romania, who not only allowed us to use the photos from their trip (end of September 2023), but also to share their experiences and stories. Thank you
“Romania, day 14, today is the day of the fortified churches in Transylvania, where there are and were many Saxon Germans. Fortified churches could shelter the inhabitants of entire villages during attacks. Each family received a small chamber. In one of the fortified churches, there were over 200 such chambers. There was also a school, weaving workshop, etc. inside, because the villages were often besieged for a long time… very interesting to see, at some fortified churches we were allowed to climb up to the tower on adventurous paths. Without any safety precautions, something that would be impossible in Austria. They just say: be careful, steep steps. When you stand under a bell supported by rotten wooden beams, you better not think about it. Another day with many new impressions. “
Thanks to Gerhard and Daniela Zitzmann for the photos and text.
