Curtea de Argeș is a Romanian town in Argeș county. It is located on the right bank of the Argeș River, which flows here through a valley of the Southern Carpathians.
It is one of the oldest towns in Romania. According to tradition, it was founded in the 14th century by Prince Radu Negru, who made it the first capital of the Principality of Wallachia.
Curtea de Argeș Cathedral (Curtea de Argeș Monastery, Curtea de Argeș Cathedral) is one of the most famous buildings in Romania. It stands on the foundations of a monastery and is located about one and a half kilometers north of the city. It resembles a very large and ornate mausoleum and was built in the Byzantine style with Moorish arabesques.

Pictures from Cluj-Napoca (in German Klausenburg, in Hungarian Kolozsvar) on June 29 and 30. The city is (probably*) the second largest city in Romania and capital of Cluj county in Transylvania.
With a population of around 400 000, Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of Transylvania. There are universities, a lively nightlife and many buildings dating back to the time of Hungarian and Saxon rule. Surrounding the main square, Union Square, is the Gothic Church of St Michael and an equestrian statue of the 15th-century King Matthias Corvinus. The baroque Banffy Palace is now a museum displaying Romanian art.

The gorges are located in the municipality of Banita in Hunedoara County and take place along the high limestone walls.
They are about 300 meters long and have been dug by deep water in limestone. On quiet summer days, they can be visited, waterproof shoes are a necessity, because the path in the keys also leads through the water.
The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and shows how the water eroded the rock. In many places, the rocks form a roof, which has been formed by horizontal erosion depending on the current for hundreds of years.

In the Ilfov district, a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogosoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogosoaia, in the municipality of Mogosoaia.
The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings, such as the watchtower and the church “St. George” near the courtyard.
The Wallachian Prince Constantin Brancoveanu had the castle built between 1698 – 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos (from which the name Mogosoaia was later derived) in the Brancoveanu style architecture named after him.
In 1714, when Constantin Brancoveanu and his entire family were executed in Constantinople, the Ottomans confiscated the entire family fortune and turned the palace into an inn (a kind of inn).
In the following decades, the castle was repeatedly conquered, destroyed and rebuilt, until it became the property of George III in 1912. Valentin Bibesco arrived, who was married to the French writer Marthe Bibesco of Romanian nobility. He gave the estate to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco restored the castle extensively.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle is located in the small town of Câmpina, Prahova County.
Iulia Hasdeu Castle was built by the historian and politician Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu as a small fortress. Work began in 1893, after Hasdeu’s daughter, Iulia Hasdeu, died at the age of 19, an event that deeply shook his life. He claimed that his deceased daughter provided him with the plans for the castle’s construction during séances. The building was completed in 1896.
The stories say that this castle is deeply frightening. There are specially designed rooms for spiritualist rituals, complete with seating for spirits. Many claim that Hasdeu (the father) did not build the castle to commemorate his daughter Iulia, but to worship Satan. Others claim to have seen Julia’s ghost, who haunts the castle to this day, dressed in white and adorned with daisies.
Since 1994, Iulia Hasdeu Castle houses the “B.P. Hasdeu” Memorial Museum, which exhibits the furniture and personal belongings of the Hasdeu family, including photographs, original documents, manuscripts, reviews written by Hasdeu and paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu and Sava Henția.

Both the Transalpina and Transfăgărășanul are open… and especially here, but also in many other regions, you can meet them again… brown bears.
Our big request in advance:
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!
DO NOT ATTRACT BEARS!
BEARS are wild forest animals and not “objects of adventure”, please respect this during your trip and when you encounter one or more bears! Have fun, but stay in the car and keep going slowly.
There are around 8,000-10,000 brown bears living in the wild in Romania, and more and more bears are being attracted to roads and cities, unfortunately, the bears are being fed by some travelers and so they keep coming back on the roads, even with their cubs.
We understand, it’s quite an experience … but bears can also be dangerous and, more importantly, by feeding them, you are destroying the natural basis of life and perhaps even the life of animals … for a moment of attraction.
Therefore, please let the bears… be bears and show responsibility … Do not feed the bears and please do not stop when you see one or more bears by the roadside. This behavior will attract the bear because it thinks it has food. However, leaving your vehicle in such a situation to get a closer look at a bear should NEVER happen. Thank you!
A worth-reading article on how to deal with bears:
https://www.trentino.com/…/verhaltensregeln-bei…/
It should be noted that feeding bears in Romania has now become a punishable offense. Your vacation can end quickly and prematurely here!

We continue to work on our new information section (sorted by regions in Romania) on camping, caravanning and more.
https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/en/uir/camping-in-romania-en/
RV and free camping / wild camping | Many things are possible, not all are allowed and some can even be dangerous. Romania’s Carpathian Mountains are inhabited by brown bears, there are many national parks and protected areas, and many things are forbidden. However, if you don’t want to stay in an official campsite, ask in the town you want to camp in. It is certainly possible to stay on private property (with permission), in front of a hostel (with permission) or elsewhere. But please ask… and so that locals can inform you about possible dangers (e.g. bears).
Our online list is still missing a lot of information and details, so please help us to complete this list (in Romanian, German and English).
New places can be added free of charge and after a quick check we will publish them online. Thanks in advance to everyone who helps us
There is also a small rating system so that those who wish to leave their impressions can do so. Please, of course, choose the right words. Thank you.

Many tourists come to Romania with their own car or rent one from the airport and … are sometimes a bit overwhelmed by the parking situation in some cities. So, some useful information and tips.
And one tip first of all: **don’t be swayed by locals’ parking creativity**. Cars are picked up quite quickly (especially from fire zones, in front of hospitals, intersections, pedestrian crossings, etc.), and retrieving them requires **paying on the spot** and, most difficult of all, finding out where the car has been taken. This can be a real adventure
# Stress-free parking in Brăila
Brăila, a city in south-eastern Romania, has around 150 000 inhabitants. Parking is always available, even in the city center, and **all parking in Brăila is free**.
# Neighboring city Galati … a bit more complicated
Galați, also in the south-east of Romania, has about 150 000 inhabitants. 300,000 inhabitants, has many paid parking lots (both in the center and in other areas). The fee applies **Mon-Sat, between 08:00 and 20:00** and can be paid at parking meters or by SMS (Romanian number required). **Please NOTE**: if you do not pay the parking fee, you will soon find a “nice” **wheel lock** . Unlocking fees vary between **200-300 Lei (40-60 Euro)**, depending on the hour.
# Brașov – parking with patience
In or near the center of Brasov **it’s difficult to find parking spaces** at any time. Many streets are one-way, and looking for a spot can take time. Parking is **paid (Monday-Saturday, between 08:00-20:00)** and can be paid at the parking meter, by SMS (for one hour, but you can send more than one SMS – Romanian number required) or by app (you can pay for 24 hours). Parking is paid throughout the city, so always check the signs.
# Timisoara, European Capital of Culture 2023 … modernization in action
In the city center, parking is **paid**, but spotting those who don’t pay is very efficient. A special **vehicle equipped with cameras** scans parked cars in real time and automatically checks the parking payment. We don’t know the exact technical details … but we suspect that fines are automatically issued to those who have not paid the fee.
# Bucharest … without words
Parking in Bucharest is **two options**: either at the hotel or **20 km outside the city** . The traffic is intense and the driving style **reminiscent of some action movies or Italian cities**. In many neighborhoods, including the city center, parking is **contra cost** and can be paid at the parking meter, by SMS (Romanian number required) or by app. In the Old Center area it is **almost impossible** to find spaces or they are extremely expensive (**300 Lei – 60 Euro for 24 hours**). **Recommendation**: choose a hotel with free parking and use taxi, Uber or public transportation. Worth it!
# In small towns and rural areas
Here parking is usually **very easy and free** . However, check the signs near tourist attractions as there may be local charges.
# What if I … ignore the fine?
It doesn’t work! In most cities, the fine is accompanied by a **wheel lock** (yellow or orange). Unblocking fees vary by the hour. So, **if parking is paid, pay the fee** – it’s simpler and cheaper.
More experiences about parking in Romania? Leave a comment!
# And a little reminder: Rovinieta
To drive on **highways and national roads in Romania** a vignette (Rovinieta) is mandatory. It can be purchased online, **up to one month in advance** of your journey: [https://www.roviniete.ro/de/](https://www.roviniete.ro/de/) Costs are affordable:
– 3 Euro / 7 days
– 7 Euro / 30 days
– 13 Euro / 90 days
– 28 Euro / 1 year
Rental cars usually come with a toll, but always check before!
Good driving and worry-free parking!
(23 March 2025)
VPlease keep the following points in mind when traveling in Romania. As of July 1, 2023, the use of dipped headlights is also mandatory during daylight, both in and outside cities (i.e. everywhere).
Also, a vignette is required for almost all roads outside cities (highways as well as national roads). The costs are not high, and the vignette can be purchased at many gas stations or online (no more than one month before your trip): https://www.roviniete.ro/en/
A vignette, which can be bought online (same link as above), is also required for motorway transit through Hungary. In addition, the vignette for Austria can be purchased via https://asfinag.at or from petrol stations in Germany / Hungary (and of course in Austria – but then it might be too late). Always keep your receipt, as in Austria they also check proof of payment, not just the vignette.
In Romania, the drink-driving limit is **0,00‰** !!!
Speed limits in Romania:
– max. 50 km/h in cities
– max. 90 km/h on national roads (even if Google Maps shows 100 km/h!!!)
– max. 130 km/h on highways
It is compulsory to have a **extinguisher** (although tourists are sometimes an exception) and **two reflective triangles**.
Even if other road users (especially trucks!!!!) exceed the speed limits in the locality, obey them for the safety of yourself, your family, other road users and, of course, to avoid fines.
Pedestrians ALWAYS have priority at pedestrian crossings (except when there is a traffic light). Stop if you see a pedestrian intending to cross.
At railroad crossings without barriers, stop completely and check in both directions. It is required by law and, above all, for your safety. In addition, the running surface over the tracks is often uneven – keep your distance from the vehicle in front and don’t start crossing while it is on the tracks!
Have a safe journey! Gute Fahrt!

Seen (July), photographed and immediately googled. The hummingbird butterfly (Macroglossum stellatarum), with its extremely rapid wing beats (up to 80 beats per second), might be mistaken for a hummingbird at first glance, but it is actually a butterfly (family Sphingidae).
This butterfly can be found from Spain to Japan, along the entire east-west length of the Palearctic*. Our people come from Galati (a city in south-eastern Romania) and probably speak fluent Romanian
*The Palearctic region, also known as the Palearctic, refers in biogeography to an ancient zoogeographic region of the world that traditionally includes Europe, North Africa and Asia (except the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula), as well as the islands adjacent to these areas (Source: Wikipedia).

The village of Viscri (German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in the district of Brasov (Kronstadt) in Transylvania.
It lies northwest of the town/castle Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg). The village had about 700 inhabitants between the 18th and 20th centuries, mainly Transylvanian Saxons plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized by both the fortified church and the village structure, which was shaped by the Saxon farms.
The village was founded by the Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document from 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.

Country life is very different from city life. It’s marked by family, hospitality, traditions, traditions, deprivation and hard work until old age.

In 1211 King Andrew II. of Hungary called the Teutonic Knights of Hungary in support of the Kumans of the country to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them numerous privileges, including immunity, the right of self-government, and the building of stone fortresses to secure the environment. In 1838, the town of Marienburg ( English name: Feldioara ) was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the castle ruins were renovated and largely rebuilt.

The fortified church of Biertan is located in the municipality of Biertan ( in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom ) in the district of Sibiu in Transylvania. Biertan belongs to the first German-Saxon settlements and was already mentioned in 1398 ( other sources: 1402 ).
Like any Saxon settlement, it stands out by a series of houses, which rise around a central square above the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon Episcopate (Bishop of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which favored the construction of one of the largest peasant communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, which is definitely worth a visit.

Rupea Fortress/Castle (first mentioned in 1324, German name: Burg Reps) is located near the town of Rupea, halfway between Brasov and Sighisoara, in the northern part of Brasov county.
The fortress of Rupea served as a refuge for the population of the surrounding villages against repeated sieges by the Turks and Tatars. It was built in 1324 during the Saxon revolt against the Hungarian king Charles Robert of Anjou.
Later, the inhabitants added three defense towers and two inner courtyards, which served as shelters. The first courtyard has a 59-meter deep well, which still has water today.

Horezu Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Muntenia Mică, in Valcea county.

https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/…/destinations…/
https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/ro/uir/de-vizitat-locatii-de-vizitat-manastirea-horezu/
Situated at the foot of the Căpățânii Mountains, a mountain massif in the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romanii de Jos, the monastery is about three kilometers (in a straight line) north of the small town of Horezu.
The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (huhurezi in Romanian) nesting in the woods around the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then Prince of Muntenia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and completed in 1709. It was a men’s monastery until 1862. After the monks were transferred to Bistrița, nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a listed building.
Situated on a hill, the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The smaller outer wall surrounds the entire monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by buildings of different heights and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side through a bell tower with a massive wooden gate armored with steel. The monastery church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the center of the complex is 32 meters long, 14 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697. There are several tombs in the vestibule of the church, the most beautiful of which is decorated with marble and a carved lid, intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, but which never fulfilled its purpose and was therefore never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and covered in gold.
The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was built in 1697. The frescoes in the chapel were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

“In the distant past, the Castle of the Wolves in Chimindia was the place where the Great White Wolf gathered the wolves of Dacia to plan their support in the Dacian-Roman war. Rooted in a medieval history and used as a military base by Austria-Hungary, the castle combines historic architecture with the beauty of nature, offering an oasis of tranquility.
The 15,000-square-meter courtyard is illuminated by miniatures of traditional households and churches created by master Ion Rodo ș, the only Romanian folk master in the Romanian Guinness Book of Records. The courtyard also offers a spacious play area and the ticket price of 20 lei (€4) includes all activities for children.”

Hermannstadt (Sibiu in Romanian, Nagyszeben in Hungarian and Hermestatt in Sieburg-Saxon) is a town in the geographical region of Seiburg and was/is one of the centers of the Seven Citizens of Saxony.
Probably in 1147 the first German settlers arrived in the area; they settled on the hill above the river Zibin, today’s Oberstadt. The first documented mention of the town dates back to 1191 as praepositum Cibiniensem; a fool appeared. From 1223 the Latin name is “Villa Hermannni” and from 1241 the German equivalent is Hermannstorf.
In the 14s. Century, Hermannstadt developed into a commercial center of international importance. It was one of the most important towns in Transylvania – perhaps even the most important, as it was not only the center of trade, administration and the church, but also the largest fortress in the whole of Transylvania.

If you want to visit Charlotenburg, you can find this place in the Romanian Banat, Timis County.
Charlotenburg (or Sarlota, also known as Barita) is a village in the commune of Bogda, Timiș county. It is the only “round village” in Romania.
The village was founded by 32 families (171 people) who emigrated from Baden-Württemberg, Alsace-Lorraine and the German-speaking Trentino region. Its existence owes much to Count Karl-Ignaz von Clary and Aldringen, who was appointed president of the Banat administration in 1769. The village was designed and built in a circular shape with an inner diameter of 210 meters.

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Castle, Iron Market Castle in German, Corvin Castle or Huniazilor Castle in Romanian, Vajdahunyadi var in Hungarian) is one of the most important non-ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.
https://xn--willkommen-in-rumnien-m2b.de/ | https://welcome-to-romania.com
The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.
After 1440, the Hungarian statesman and military commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the ancestral castle of the Hunyadi family. In the second construction phase, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen carried out another major remodeling of the building. As a result, today’s castle is a mixture of different architectural styles.

Valea Viilor (German: Wurmloch) is a commune in Sibiu county, Transylvania region.
Valea Viilor, originally Vorumloc, was probably first mentioned under the Hungarian name Baromlak in 1224 (possibly 1305). Transylvanian-Saxon Hörigendorf, which was originally held by the nobility, was later able to join the Mediascher see and thus become free. Until 1964, the place in Romania was run under the German-derived name Vorumloc, later renamed “Valea Viilor” (German: valley of the vines).
In 1850 the proportion of Germans was over 65% and in 1977 over 50%. Today only about 1-2% of the inhabitants are German.

Beautiful pictures of the “Merry Cemetery” and the museum/workshop in Săpânța (Maramureș County), which we received today from Mr. Alexander Laszlo. Thank you very much for them.
The “Cimitirul Vesel” is located about 18 kilometers west of Sighetu Marmatiei and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the Maramureș region.
The crosses, which were painted by local craftsmen, are vividly colored and predominantly blue.
The idea for the cemetery was conceived in 1935 by the woodcarver Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has a carved image at the top depicting a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, short poems or humorous rhyming texts describe the life of the person buried there.

The Horezi Monastery (also known as Hurezu Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of Romanian Orthodox nuns located in the historical region of Valahia Mica in Valcea.
At the foot of Căpățânii Mountain, a mountain massif of the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romani de Jos, the monastery is located about three kilometers (air company) north of the small town of Horezu.
The cries of the nocturnal birds of prey (Romanian owls) that roost in the woods surrounding the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then prince of Wallachia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and was built in 1709 Until 1862 it was a man’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistri ta, the nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is under conservation.
On a hill the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. Outside a smaller wall surrounded the whole monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by different buildings and in the east by a wall. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side of a belfry, armored with a solid wooden gate with steel. The monastery church of Sfin ti Impara ti Constantine and Helen built in the middle of the complex in a cross shape is 32 meters long and 32 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697 In the vestibule of the church there are some tombs, most beautifully equipped with marble and carved casing for Prince Brâncoveanu, but it did not fulfill its purpose and therefore was never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and encased in gold.
The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side opposite the entrance to the church and was erected in 1697 The frescoes of the formation were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

Sibiu (German: Hermannstadt) is an important cultural and economic center in southern Transylvania.
The old center / city center of Sibiu in beautiful pictures. Hermannstadt (in Romanian Sibiu, in Hungarian Nagyszeben and in the Transylvanian Saxon dialect Hermestatt) is the county seat of the county of the same name in the historical region of Transylvania.
The first German settlers are believed to have arrived in the area in 1147. The first documentary mention of the town dates back to 1191. From 1223 the Latin name “Villa Hermanni” is attested, and from 1241 the German equivalent Hermannstorf.

Cârța Monastery (in German Kerz) is a former Cistercian/Benedictine monastery in Sibiu county, Transylvania.
It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, between the cities of Sibiu and Făgăraș and is today an Evangelical-Lutheran church. The exact date of the foundation of the monastery of Cârța (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown.
A Konstanz document of April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely mentions that the monastery was founded, built and endowed with rights and privileges by his predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th-15th centuries, analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, put the year of foundation around 1202-1203.

Rupea Fortress (in German: Repser Burg) is located near the town of Rupea (Reps), about 50 km from Brasov – on the road to Targu Mures – and is one of the oldest fortresses in Romania.
Built in the 11th century, the fortress is the symbol of Rupea. Situated on Cohalmului Hill, at an altitude of 578 meters above sea level, it can be seen from a great distance. It is mentioned in documents for the first time in 1324, when the Saxons rebelled against the King of Hungary.

Făgăraș lies on the road from Sibiu to Brasov. At the end of the 12th century, the town’s castle was just a wooden fortress, which was enlarged into a stone fortress in the 14th century.
The castle houses a museum, which can be visited together with the citadel. Right next to the fortress is the cathedral/church of St. John the Baptist.

The marquis is a typical gift given on March 1st in Romania. It consists of a red and white ribbon, usually with a small talisman, and is attached to the clothing.
This symbol of spring was originally worn by women and children. The two colors (red and white) represent snow and the sun.
Nowadays, mainly women are given marquise, to which lucky charms are attached. As soon as you see a tree in blossom, you hang the marquis in its branches and make a wish!
