Christmas
(24 December 2020)
Time for reflection and time for family and loved ones around us …
It’s not so simple at the moment, there are many things that get us down, many people are sad, afraid and may not even be able to see their families at Christmas. But it is also a time of hope, faith and community with loved ones … at least in our hearts.
We wish you a merry, healthy and happy Christmas and a happy New Year
And again Poiana Brasov

Poiana Brasov (in German: Schulerau) is one of the most famous winter sports resorts in Romania and is located near the city of Brasov (Kronstadt), at the foot of the Postavarul mountain (in German: Schuler, altitude 1,799 meters) in Transylvania.

Sighisoara in the heart of Transylvania
(14 December 2020)
The town of Sighișoara is located in the Mureș district and is the largest medieval fortress in Europe. It was founded in the second half of the 12th century by German immigrants, Transylvanian things. The fortress town of Sighișoara was surrounded by a wall with 14 defense towers, nine (9) of which are still preserved. The most important of the towers is the belfry which was built in the 14th century to defend the main city gate. The tower is also known for its seven (7) wooden statues about 80 cm high, which personify the pagan gods and the days of the week: Diana (Monday), Mars (Tuesday), Mercury (Wednesday), Jupiter (Thursday), Venus (Friday), Saturn (Saturday) and the Sun (Sunday).
Tomorrow is the third coming and we wish you a merry and reflective Christmas season
(12 December 2020)
It’s certainly different this time, but no less Christmas than usual. We should find time to relax, reflect and think about our loved ones. We may not see one or the other this Christmas, but they are all with us in our hearts.
The Urlaub team in Romania wishes you can approach the “final spurt” a little more calmly. A child’s shining eyes are worth more than all the talk about what may or may not have been. We wish you happiness, love and health these days.
Sulina – the lonely town on the Black Sea
(11 December 2020)
The town of Sulina is not connected to the Romanian road network and can only be reached by water with private boats and passenger ships. It is located at the easternmost point of Romania, directly on the Black Sea.
Sulina was already an important river and sea port in the Byzantine and later Genoese and Turkish period, but it has lost its importance today due to the construction of larger ports (including Galati, Braila, …).
The old lighthouse from 1887, some old villas on the quays and the large cemetery are testimonies of this past. Sulina has a kilometers long sandy beach on the Black Sea. The colonies of pelicans are a feast for the eyes, and nature lovers and fishing enthusiasts will earn their money here. Far away from the “wild world”, Sulina is a quiet, peaceful and wonderful place that invites you to relax, with an unfortunately very high unemployment rate of 40%.
Thank you Sulina fabuloasa, Danube Delta for permission to use the images.

Christmas in Romania – Sibiu / Brasov
(23 November 2020)
No one knows what Christmas will really be like this year, where to meet or where we should/should stay at home. But in spite of it all, or maybe because of it, cities are starting to deck themselves … with trees and lights and, depending on the region, soon the first snow. The pictures show the city of Brasov and the Christmas tree in Sibiu in December. We wish and hope that this winter will be a peaceful, quiet and, above all, healthy time for everyone.

(10 November 2020 / Images: November 2020)
This church (Biserica Sfânta Cuvioasa Parascheva) is located at the entrance to Galati and is one of the largest churches in the city. The picture above the entrance shows “St. Wonderful Paraskeva” who was born in Epibatai (now Selimpașa, near Istanbul in Turkey), a village in a Byzantine province in the 10th century and at the age of 15 decided to lead a religious life in a monastery and later as a hermit.
Botanical Garden in Galati – today
(8 November 2020 / Images: November 2020)
A walk in Galati Botanical Garden in early November. Fall is here, but winter still seems far, far away. It is fall, but many flowers are still in bloom, some butterflies are still on the move and it is pleasantly warm in the sun.
Bicaz gorge in winter
(6 November 2020)
This gorge is a particularly picturesque area in Romania, which lies in the central part of the Hășmaș Mountains in the northeastern part of the country, in the districts of Neamț and Harghita. The gorge starts near the Red Lake (Lacul Roșu) and by the time you follow the road you can admire many bizarre rock formations, huge boulders and swirling water.

There is strength in serenity
(5 November 2020 / Images: May 2020)
As you travel through the country, you can see a multitude of flocks of sheep, goats and also cattle, guarded by shepherds and their dogs. Here you’ll find Europe’s last nomads, often moving their herds hundreds of kilometers from winter pastures to summer pastures and back. More than 3,000 wolves still roam Romania’s border regions with Ukraine and pose a constant threat to these herds.
In the Țarcu Mountains (in south-west Romania) you can even see a herd of free-roaming European zebra, which are extinct but were reintroduced there a few years ago by WWF.
