In the summer of 2023, we followed the journey of “Schnuff” and his motorcycle friends through Romania, here to the Sinca Veche Monastery.
The Sinca Veche Monastery is located in the commune of Sinca, Brasov County. It is about 22 kilometers from the town of Fagaras. As early as 1204, Sinca Veche was mentioned in a letter from Pope Innocent III.
The cave church of Sinca Veche is also known by the names: the Temple of Fulfilled Prayers, the Temple of Destiny, the Cave Monastery, and the Monastery Cave (templul împlinirii rugăciunii, templul ursitelor, mănăstirea rupestră, peștera mănăstire).

Romanian dishes | Ardei umpluti & Sarmale
(18 September 2025)
Pictures from last weekend (and we were also allowed to try how it tastes) from Postolache in the Focsani region. Conclusion: Simply delicious.
Ardei umpluti (in German: stuffed peppers) and our beloved sarmale, but this time all vegetarian, without meat. We had a lot of comments on the Facebook post from two weeks ago asking for a meat-free version. Here it is, and as many people wrote at the time, you can replace the meat and the leaves used to wrap the sarmale in a variety of ways.
PS: Three pictures were taken before cooking. The picture with the two peppers shows them after cooking.

Marienburg / Feldioara | Brasov County
(17 September 2025)
Marienburg from Feldioara (Romanian name of Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the region of Transylvania in the district of Brașov.
https://xn--willkommen-in-rumnien-m2b.de/ | https://welcome-to-romania.com
The castle offers a wonderful view of the surrounding area and the mountains of Brașov (German name: Kronstadt), it is located at approx. 20 kilometers away from Brașov on the way to Sighișoara (in German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (almost 500 meters above sea level).
In 1211 King Andrew II called. from Hungary The Teutonic Knights in support of the Kumans in the country to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them many privileges, including immunity, the right to self-government, and the construction of stone fortresses to ensure the environment. In 1838, the city of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the ruins of the castle were renovated and largely rebuilt.
Sulina … Riverside promenade | Danube Delta
(17 September 2025)
With a length of approximately five km is the waterfront (promenade on the waterfront) of Sulina. It starts at Mila 2 and next to the typical blue and green houses, the path is dotted with new buildings (mostly hotels and accommodation) until you reach the old city center.
https://discover-sulina.com | https://xn--willkommen-in-rumnien-m2b.de/
You can also meet horses right in the city, which do not belong to anyone and roam freely as they please. There are few cars (because they have to be brought to Sulina by boat), the clocks are slower here… and that’s a good thing!
To get to Sulina, drive approximately 1 hour 20 minutes with a small boat (max. 12 people, up to 80 km !! fast) from Tulcea. This trip must be experienced only once.

Curtea de Arges is a Romanian town in Arges County. It is located on the right bank of the Arges River, which flows here through a valley of the Southern Carpathians.
It is one of the oldest towns in Romania. According to a tradition, it was founded in the 14th century by Prince Radu Negru, who named it the first capital of the Principality of Wallachia.
The Cathedral of Curtea de Arges (Manastirea Curtea de Arges, Catedrala Curtea de Arges) is one of the most famous buildings in Romania. Biertan | Village and fortified church / church fortress | Sibiu County
(16 September 2025)
The church / church fortress is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom), Sibiu County, in Transylvania.
Biertan is part of the first Saxon settlements and was documented as early as 1398 (other sources: 1402).
Like every Saxon settlement, it stands out with a row of houses arranged around a central square, above which the imposing fortified church rises. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate (the bishop’s seat of the Evangelical Church A.C.), which favored the development of one of the largest peasant communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.

Sarmale… A magical word and only, DELICIOUS
(14 September 2025)
They are not prepared everywhere in Romania according to the same recipe. Depending on the region and taste of the individual, they also in size vary from one place to another.
Sarmas contains meat wrapped with other ingredients in vine leaves or sauerkraut. Sarmale can be without meat (vegetarian) with vegetables.
We present a special recipe from Moldova with meat filling.
For 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken or a mixture) add:
– 4 – 5 medium onions
– 100 grams of rice
– salt, pepper – one teaspoon each
– Dill and parsley – to taste
– Tomato broth (150 grams)
– 4 tablespoons oil (in combination with chicken)
If the meat is lean, add a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or corn flour to better tie the mixture. Mix the contents well and then wrap it in vine leaves or cabbage, according to your preferences.
Cook for about two (2) hours, placing the sarmale close to each other in a saucepan and adding water. When the liquid in which the sarmale boils is low, add hot water to compensate. Check after the first hour of cooking and then whenever you think it is necessary.
We thank “Mama” Postolache for the recipe and her daughter for work and images.
From the amount of ingredients, about 120 wires are produced. They are usually consumed with sour cream (cream / cream) and hot pepper (chili pepper). Also, depending on the region, white bread and polenta (from maize semolina, similar to Italian polenta) are added.
We wish you good appetite (Bon appetite)
Church of St. Nicholas in Densus | Hunedoara County
(14 September 2025)
The Church of Saint Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County, in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.
Built in its current form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, it used materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. The church interior features 15th-century frescoes depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian attire.
Historians suggest the site once housed a Dacian temple for the god Zamolxis, later turned into a Roman temple for Mars. The church’s origins trace back to the 4th century, making it the oldest church in Romania and Southeast Europe.
We thank Mr. Frank Schleßmann for sending these beautiful pictures (April 22, 2025).

https://welcome-to-romania.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de

It has an extensive library and several collections, including medieval weapons and costumes from the 16th century. It can be visited daily and is also available for weddings and events.
Bucharest: St. George New Church
(14 September 2025)
The Church of St. George is located at Strada Cavafii Vechi 6, at “Kilometer 0” of Romania (regarding the distance measurements from Bucharest) and east of the Old Town of Bucharest.
As early as 1574, the Frenchman Pierre Lescalopier, while traveling through Bucharest, noted that there were two beautiful and holy places in the city center, one of which was St. George’s Church. Thus, the church is one of the oldest in the city.
It is a beautiful church in the heart of the city. In front of the church, you can find a bell with the German inscription: “Mich goss Johann Freisinger Glockengiesser in Wien 1856”.

The Palace of Parliament in Bucharest | Capital of Romania
(13 September 2025)
The “Palace of Parliament” in Bucharest, with approximately 360,000 sqm, is not only the second largest building in the world (after the Pentagon in Washington), but also ranks first in the Guinness Book of World Records for its total weight.
Among other things, 1,000,000 cubic meters of marble, 3,500 tons of crystal, 700,000 tons of steel and bronze, 900,000 cubic meters of wood, and 200,000 sqm of carpet were used. The palace has about 1,000 rooms, countless corridors, hallways, stairs, and 40 elevators.

Károlyi Castle (Carei) | Satu Mare County
(13 September 2025)
Károlyi Castle is a neo-Gothic-Neo-Baroque palace complex in the town of Carei (Gross Karol in German, Nagykároly in Hungarian) in Satu Mare County in northwestern Romania. It was once the ancestral seat of the Hungarian noble family Károlyi von Nagykároly.
The castle with its gardens and museums is open to visitors and hosts several exhibitions.
Short history:
The origins of the castle are in a stone house built in 1482 by Láncz László Károlyi with the permission of King Matthias. Due to its strategic position, the fortress was part of the system of fortifications used against the Turks in the seventeenth century, after the expansion of the fortifications in 1661 and 1666.
This fortress was demolished by József Károlyi in 1794 to build a baroque castle designed by Joseph Bitthauser in its place. There were also several towers of different shapes and sizes. The inner courtyard was covered with a solid wood ceiling and thus transformed into a reception hall. A ditch was also built around the castle.

The statue of Decebalus | County of Mehedinti
(12 September 2025)
The statue of the Dacian king Decebalus (ca. 86 to 106 AD) is 55 meters high and the largest / highest rock sculpture in Europe.
https://welcome-to-romania.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de
It is located on a rock formation in the Almaj Mountains on the banks of the Danube, close to the municipality of Dubova (Mehedinti district) in the Iron Gate Nature Park (Parcul Natural Portile de Fier).
It took 10 years, one million US dollars and 12 sculptors to create it … and it was not commissioned by the Dacian king himself, as was perhaps thought, but by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004.

(9 September 2025)
Mud volcanoes (Roman: Muddy volcanoes) are located in the municipality of Berca in the district of Buzău. In 1924, the area of 30 km ² was declared a nature reserve.
The main attraction of the reservation are the small mud volcanoes that have a height of a few centimeters / meters, which is cold volcanism. Volcanoes are made of gases that rise from about 3,000 m deep through layers of clay and contain water. At the surface of the earth, the mud dries up and forms structures that resemble a volcano.

County Museum of History Brasov / Bastionul Tesatorilor
(8 September 2025)
The History Museum of the city and county of Brașov (Kronstadt) was founded in 1950 and is located in the former parish hall in the center of the Council Square (square) or partly in the Weavers’ Bastion in Brașov (Kronstadt).
https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://discover-brasov.com
The bastion, defended and maintained by the linen weavers’ guild, was built in two stages between 1421-1436 and 1570-1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small arms that could be used through narrow, circular bullet holes throughout the galleries. Two guard towers were built, which monitored the city both militarily and in terms of possible fires.
After the restoration, the weavers’ bastion was transformed into a museum.

Auf dem Lande | From the countryside
(7 September 2025)
Life in the countryside is very different from life in the cities. It is characterized by family, hospitality, traditions, hardships, and hard work well into old age.
And … it is often a happier life than we imagine. Those who have little worry less, and the many daily news updates of the world, which we constantly receive on our phones (and don’t really need), reach these people less often or perhaps not at all.
We thank the photographer Sorin Onișor ( Sorin Onișor ) for the permission to use these atmospheric images.

Dovetail … from Călimănești | Vâlcea county
(7 September 2025)
It’s been a good two years since I saw the first dovetail in Galati. Yesterday I was in Călimănești and there it was again ,
At first glance, the extremely fast wingbeats (up to 80 beats per second) of the dove’s tail (Macroglossum stellatarum) suggest you are looking at a hummingbird, but it is actually a butterfly (hawkmoth family).
This butterfly can be found from Spain to Japan, along the entire east-west length of the Palearctic*.
*In biogeography, the Palearctic region, also known as the Palearctic, refers to a zoogeographic region of the ancient world that traditionally includes Europe, North Africa and Asia (excluding the front and back of India and the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula), as well as the islands off these areas (source: Wikipedia).

Corvin Fortress / Castle in Hunedoara
(5 September 2025)
Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Fortress, in German Burg Eisenmarkt, in Romanian Castelul Corvinilor or Castelul Huniazilor, in Hungarian Vajdahunyadi vár) is one of the most important non‑ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.
The stone fortress was built on the remains of a 14th‑century fortification and is located in the southwestern part of the city of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.
https://welcome-to-romania.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de
The castle, a listed historic monument, is also known under many other names (Corvin Castle, Castle of the Corvins, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which trace back to its location or owners.
The Hungarian statesman and military leader John Hunyadi transformed an existing fortification after 1440 into the ancestral seat of the Hunyadi family. During the second construction phase, starting in 1458, the castle was expanded under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further significant modifications were made under Prince Gábor Bethlen. Today, the castle therefore displays a mix of architectural styles.
From 1724 the castle was in Austrian possession, and since 1918 it has belonged to the Romanian state. Aside from being a tourist attraction, the castle has been (and still is) used as a backdrop for numerous Romanian and international film productions. Today, it houses a museum.

Rural life in the Apuseni mountains
(4 September 2025)
Wildly romantic for some, hard work with many hardships for others—in the Apuseni Mountains, both come together. Who is happier… everyone must decide for themselves. More does not always mean better… at least not when it comes to one’s own satisfaction.
The Apuseni Mountains are a mountain range in western Romania. They reach peak heights of almost 1,850 meters (highest peak: Cucurbăta Mare at 1,849 meters) and form the northern section of the western Romanian Carpathians. The range has an almost circular shape with a diameter of 130 to 150 km, is bordered by the Mureș, Someș, and Barcău rivers, and is located in the counties of Arad, Bihor, Cluj, Alba, and Hunedoara.
We thank the photographer Gerd Deeken for allowing us to use these pictures.
The Tower of the Cizmarilor in Sighisoara (Schäßburg)
(4 September 2025)
The Shoemakers’ Tower, first documented in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.
Its broken roof, with two observation turrets on the south and north sides, gives it a distinctive appearance. From this tower comes the stone tablet with the oldest coat of arms of the city and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (translated: “The name of the Lord is the strongest fortress”), which is preserved in the History Museum in the Clock Tower (Turnul cu Ceas) in Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg).
After the Second World War, the tower’s appearance underwent some changes. The windows were widened and the entrance modified, and later the exterior staircase was added.

Mogosoaia Castle | Near the city of Bucharest
(3 September 2025)
In the Ilfov district, a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest ( the capital of Romania ), Mogosoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogosoaia, in Mogosoaia.
The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings, such as the watchtower and the church „ Saint George ” near the courtyard.
Wallachian Prince Constantin Brancoveanu had the castle built between 1698 and 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos ( from which the name Mogosoaia ) later derives in the Brancoveanu architecture style named after him.
In 1714, when Constantin Brancoveanu and his entire family were executed in Constantinople, the Ottomans confiscated the entire family fortune and turned the palace into an inn ( a kind of inn ).
In the following decades, the castle was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly, until it became the property of George III in 1912. Valentin Bibesco arrived, who was married to the French writer Marthe Bibesco from the Romanian nobility. He gave the estate to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco restored the castle at sea.

THE HISTORY OF THE POTATO IN TRANSYLVANIA
(1 September 2025)
Last weekend, the official opening of the Potato Festival (period: August 30 to November 2, 2025) took place at the Brukenthal National Museum.
The painter Mircea Codrea, originally from Avrig, gave the event a special brilliance through a gesture of great artistic depth: in front of the guests and visitors of the Brukenthal National Museum, he presented a reinterpretation of Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting – “The Potato Eaters” (1885). This painting, regarded as one of the most expressive works of the Dutch artist’s youth, depicts a humble scene from the life of Dutch peasants, sitting around a table and sharing a modest but authentic potato-based dinner. The work is characterized by its dramatic composition, dark tones, powerful brushstrokes, and the expressive faces of the figures, all reflecting van Gogh’s empathy for ordinary people and rural life.
Through this artistic intervention, Mircea Codrea brought a visual reflection on the cultural significance of the potato into the present, complementing the festival’s theme and giving it a European artistic dimension. It was a subtle but powerful homage not only to the food itself but also to those who cultivate and distribute it – a gesture that transcends time and borders.

As early as 1377, a monastery was built here by Prince Radu II, which was rebuilt in 1495 (after falling into ruin). The town (since 2004, Tismana has city status) developed in the 15th/16th century around the monastery and is today an important Romanian center of the wood industry.
