Biertan fortified church in winter
(04 August 2025)
X

(04 August 2025)
This church/fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in Sibiu County, Transylvania.
Biertan is part of the first German-Saxon settlements and was officially mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources: 1402).
Like every Saxon settlement, it stands out with a row of houses surrounding a central square, above which rises the imposing fortified church. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate (bishopric of the Evangelical Church A.C.), which favored the development of one of the largest peasant communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.
We thank photographer Sorin Onisor ( facebook.com/sorinonisor ) for allowing us to use these beautiful images.

(27 July 2025)
Medias (in German Mediasch, in Hungarian Medgyes and in Saxon Medwesch, Medves or Meddesch) is a municipality in the county of Sibiu in Transylvania. It consists of the town of Medias and the village of Ighisu Nou (German: Sächsisch-Eibesdorf) and has around 55,000 inhabitants. After Sibiu, Medias is the second largest and most populous town in the county of Sibiu.
In Roman times, there was a Roman fortress called "Media" on the site of today's city. Later, in the 12th to 13th centuries, the Hungarian kings settled German and Western European settlers, the so-called Transylvanian Saxons, in this area of Medias.

A magical road in and through the Fagaras Mountains. The Transfagarasan road connects the two historical regions of Wallachia and Transylvania in a breathtaking mountain landscape.
Currently open (probably until sometime in mid/end of October) and if you are already here, you should definitely also check out the "neighboring road," the Transalpina.
Our tip for a round trip: Sibiu (Hermannstadt) > towards Avrig / Brasov and then head south onto the Transfagarasan > Curtea de Arges, Arges County > Valcea County > Brezoi and via the Transalpina to Sebes and back to Sibiu. We recommend at least one, if not two or three overnight stays along the way.

Cârța Monastery in Transylvania | Sibiu County

(30 June 2025)
Cârța Monastery (in German Kerz) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in Transylvania, Romania.
It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, almost exactly halfway between the cities of Sibiu and Fagaras, and today serves as an Evangelical Lutheran church.
The exact founding date of Cârța Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A document from Konstanz dated April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built, and endowed with rights and privileges by his predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th to 15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the founding year of the monastery as around 1202–1203.
We thank Mr. Daniel Sippel for sending these impressive pictures.

„The bridge of lies” is one of the most famous landmarks of Sibiu. Built in 1859 * in Friedrichshütte in Hesse, here was built the first cast iron bridge in Romania (and the second in Europe).
There are many legends about names, but because it was also the first bridge that did not stand on the pillars, it was called „ Liegebrücke ”... and the word „ Lügenbrücke ”' then it wasn't that far ... 😅 😊
* Information: In 1859, Sibiu and the region of Transylvania belonged to the Hungarian Kingdom since then (from 1867, then Austria-Hungary)

First of all, a beautiful and typically German word, "Dampflokomotivenmuseum" (in Romanian: Muzeul locomotivelor cu abur), but definitely a wonderful place here in Hermannstadt / Sibiu for all railway fans and those who want to become one.
The museum, inaugurated in 1994, includes about 40 locomotives, both standard gauge and narrow gauge, as well as snow plows and steam cranes. Seven of these locomotives are still operational today and can be admired and ridden during special trips or trains.
The Steam Locomotive Museum is located opposite the main train station in Sibiu (in German: Hermannstadt) and consists of the former roundhouse and the turntable of the railway line. The exhibited locomotives were built between 1885 and 1959 in Romania and other countries such as Germany (Henschel & Sohn, Borsig, Schwartzkopff) and the United States (Baldwin Locomotive Works).
