Putna Monastery is located about 70 kilometers from the city of Suceava, in Suceava county of the same name.
Today it is part of a group of Romanian Orthodox monasteries – the Moldavian monasteries – in southern Bucovina.
The monastery was built between 1466 and 1469 and consecrated in 1470. The monastery museum houses numerous precious manuscripts, maps, paintings, icons, linen cloths and other ecclesiastical objects dating back to the 15th century. Worth mentioning are the self-portrait of Stephen’s second wife, Maria de Mangop, and the skull of St. Ghenadie.
