Timisoara, always beautiful, and of course we had to visit our probably biggest fan in spring at Take Five Coffee / Bazara, Strade Lucian Blaga 5, parallel to the street with the umbrellas.
The small cafe in the heart of the city, yet located in the first quiet side street, is always worth a visit. And besides the very nice hostess, you will find there, as you can see in the picture, not only our brochure “Holiday in Romania” but also eager readers of it

Tradition and customs in the Banat—those who see the pictures without knowing the history of the Danube Swabians might believe they are somewhere in Germany, in the Swabian region. But no, these photos are from Romania.
Images from the Kirchweih festival in the community of Liebling, located in Timiș County in the historic Banat region. In the German communities of Banat, Kirchweih festivals are traditionally celebrated. On this occasion, the beautiful Swabian folk costumes are worn. If you travel through Banat from summer to autumn, visiting a Kirchweih festival is well worth it.

The fortress of Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill (Castle Hill) to repel enemy attacks.
https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://discover-brasov.com
Throughout its history, it has been attacked and rebuilt time and again, and was even an important point of defense during the First World War. Originally, there was only the fortress tower. From 1630-1631 the outer fortress was built. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and served several purposes over the centuries: it was used as a storehouse, was a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century, and was also used as a fortress.
In the 18th century it was a prison for Turkish prisoners and later, during the plague, a special ward was set up for the sick.

The Clock Tower is the landmark of Sighisoara (German name: Schäßburg) and… a wonderful viewing platform over the city of Sighisoara.
The tower (Turnul cu ceas) was built in the second half of the 14th century as a defensive structure for the main gate of the fortress and as the town council’s seat (until the end of 1656). Its current appearance dates from the end of the 17th century, when on April 30, 1676, a devastating fire that started in the lower town also spread to the tower. The Clock Tower, including the weather vane, has a total height of about 64 meters. The wall thickness on the ground floor is 2.4 meters, the masonry height is 39.5 meters (since 1804), and the tower has five floors. On the top floor, the tower is surrounded by an open wooden gallery, which was also used as a fire watch and lookout over the city’s surroundings.

Sarmale, DELICIOUS!! Sarmale are not prepared everywhere in Romania according to the same recipe. Depending on the region and personal taste, they vary from place to place, including in size.
Sarmale contain meat mixed with other ingredients, wrapped in grape leaves or pickled cabbage. They can also be meatless (vegetarian) with vegetables. We present a special recipe from Moldova with meat filling.
For 1 kg ground meat (pork, beef, chicken, or a mix), add:
– 4–5 medium onions
– 100 g rice
– salt, pepper – 1 tsp each
– dill and parsley – to taste
– tomato broth (150 g)
– 4 tbsp oil (with chicken meat)
If using lean meat, add a few tbsp breadcrumbs or cornmeal to bind better. Mix well and wrap in grape leaves or cabbage, as preferred.
Cook for about 2 hours. Place sarmale tightly in a pot, cover with water. When liquid reduces, add hot water. Check after the first hour and as needed.
The recipe matches the pictures. Thanks to “Mama” Postolache for the recipe and her daughter for the work and pictures.
The ingredients make about 120 sarmale. They are usually eaten with smântână (sour cream) and ardei iute (hot peppers). Depending on the region, white bread and mămăligă (made from cornmeal, similar to Italian polenta) are also served.
Enjoy your meal!

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brașov County, Transylvania.
It lies northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (in German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (in German: Schäßburg). Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons, plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized both by its fortified church and by the village structure shaped by Saxon farmsteads.
The village was founded at the end of the 12th century by Transylvanian Saxons and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. At the northwestern end of the village stands the fortified church.
In the 12th century, before the arrival of the German settlers, the Székelys (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. In the 13th century, the church was expanded. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a defensive wall with towers was built.

Feldorf (in Romanian Filitelnic) is located in Mureș County, in a side valley of the Little Târnava River.
Until autumn 1944, it was an almost entirely German village. The population had to flee, and only a small part returned after the end of the war. The Evangelical fortified church was supposed to be demolished a few years ago due to the risk of collapse. A private initiative from abroad prevented this. Since then, restoration work has been taking place, also with the help of foreign students. The village has largely preserved its original Saxon architectural style.

Medias (German: Mediasch, Hungarian: Medgyes, and in Saxon: Medwesch, Medves, or Meddesch) is a city/municipality in Sibiu County in Transylvania. It consists of the city of Medias and the village of Ighisu Nou (German: Sächsisch-Eibesdorf) and has about 55,000 inhabitants. After Sibiu, Medias is the second largest and most populous city in Sibiu County.
In Roman times, there was a Roman fortress called “Media” on the territory of today’s city. Later, in the 12th and 13th centuries, the Hungarian kings settled German and Western European colonists, the so-called Transylvanian Saxons, in this area of Medias.

Soimos is a place in western Romania, which belongs to the small town of Lipova in Arad County. Its most striking feature is the medieval castle ruin located high above the Mures Valley.

The oldest part of the castle is the keep, and the courtyard covers an area of 35 × 22 meters. On the north side of the Renaissance wing, there is still a balcony, known as the Isabella Balcony, named after Isabella Jagiellonica, who lived here from 1541. In the southern part of the complex, there is a knight’s room and a chapel.
Soimos Castle (German: Falkenstein) was first mentioned in 1278 as Castrum Somos in a Latin document.

The church / fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (German: Birthälm, Hungarian: Berethalom) in Sibiu County, Transylvania.
Biertan is part of the first German-Saxon settlements and was already mentioned in documents in 1398 (other sources: 1402).
Like every Saxon settlement, it stands out for its row of houses arranged around a central square, above which the imposing fortified church rises. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon episcopate (bishop’s seat of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which favored the development of one of the largest rural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.
