We start at the end, but at the beginning we want to thank the Zitzmann family, who allowed us not only to use the pictures of the trip (end of September 2023), but also to take over the experiences. Thank you
“We drive the Transalpina, but after a few hours we realize that we miss the beautiful part. Google talks about blockage, missing guard rails and that the road was never finished…well, we let it come to that, turn around, drive back (the Transalpina is somehow divided in two) 100erte Schwammerlsucher pull 1000s of kilos of mushrooms from the forest, in large vats that we know from the grape harvest. Incredibly which quantities there are.
We find a great place to sleep, one may drive the road only from 8-18 clock…well we stand anyway, and do not drive. In Romania it is apparently no matter, locals drive around of course also after 18 o’clock, dig for stones, etc.. In the morning then a flock of sheep near us, still spend a lot of time in the wonderful mountain area, to finally arrive in the afternoon at the castle in Hunedoara to visit it.”
Thanks to Gerhard Daniela Zitzmann for pictures and text.

This castle, also called Sturdza Palace, was built in its current form between 1880 and 1904 by Gheorghe Sturdza and his wife Maria in the village of Miclauseni. It is located in the northeast of Romania, about 65 km from the city of Iasi.
https://welcome-to-romania.com | https://urlaub-in-rumänien.de
The building was erected at the end of the 19th century on the site of a boyar’s house, and the exterior walls were decorated with numerous reliefs. The castle is equipped with marble staircases, rosewood furniture, terracotta and porcelain stoves. It has an extensive library and several collections, including medieval weapons and costumes from the 16th century. It can be visited daily and is also available for weddings and events.

The Church of St. George is located at Strada Cavafii Vechi 6, at “Kilometer 0” of Romania (regarding the distance measurements from Bucharest) and east of the Old Town of Bucharest.
As early as 1574, the Frenchman Pierre Lescalopier, while traveling through Bucharest, noted that there were two beautiful and holy places in the city center, one of which was St. George’s Church. Thus, the church is one of the oldest in the city.
It is a beautiful church in the heart of the city. In front of the church, you can find a bell with the German inscription: “Mich goss Johann Freisinger Glockengiesser in Wien 1856”.

In the north of Romania, in Maramureș County, lies the Sapanta Monastery, also known as Peri Monastery.
In 1391, the grandchildren of Dragos Voda donated the land and goods on which the monastery, a stone church, was built. This stone church served for more than 300 years as the main seat of the Romanian diocese of Maramureș and was later rebuilt by master Ioan Macarie as a place of prayer for the Greek-Catholic community in the region.
The tower of the monastery church is 78 meters high, making it the third tallest church tower in Romania, after the Orthodox Cathedral in Timisoara and St. Michael’s Church in Cluj-Napoca.

Certainly the largest cathedral in Romania and probably also, with its current construction date, the newest in this millennium in all of Europe. The cathedral is 127 meters high (Cologne Cathedral is 157 meters high) and has space for 5,000 people on 17,800 m² of interior area.
The total area of the complex, located in the center of Bucharest and right next to the Parliament building, covers almost 36,900 m². The cathedral/complex was started/planned in 2009, and it will be more or less fully completed (including all auxiliary buildings) in a few years.

The Danube is the border river between Romania and Serbia, Bulgaria, and Ukraine.
Near the towns of Socol and Bazias, the Romanian section of the Danube begins, stretching all the way to Mila 0, the so-called Mile Zero, at the Danube’s mouth in the city of Sulina. There are many sights to see along the river’s course, until, after a long journey, it fans out into the Danube Delta behind the cities of Braila and Galati in southeastern Romania, and about 60 kilometers further, it flows into the Black Sea.

Iulia Hasdeu Castle is located in the small town of Câmpina in Prahova County.
The Iulia Hasdeu Castle was built by historian and politician Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu in the form of a small fortress. Construction began in 1893 after Hasdeu’s daughter, Iulia Hasdeu, died at the age of 19, an event that deeply shattered Hasdeu’s life. He claimed that his deceased daughter provided the plans for the castle’s construction during spiritualism sessions. The building was completed in 1896.
Stories tell that the castle is profoundly eerie. There are rooms specifically designed for spiritualist rituals, complete with seating for spirits. Many claim that Hasdeu (the father) did not build the castle to honor his daughter Iulia but to worship Satan. Others report seeing Iulia’s ghost, haunting the castle to this day, dressed in white and adorned with daisies.
Since 1994, the Iulia Hasdeu Castle has housed the “B.P. Hașdeu” Memorial Museum, which displays the furniture and personal belongings of the Hașdeu family, including photos, original documents, manuscripts, reviews by Hasdeu, and paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu and Sava Henția.

Both the Transalpina and the Transfagarasan are open … and especially here, but also in many other regions, you can meet them again … the brown bears.
First of all our BIG request:
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS !!!
DO NOT ATTRACT BEARS !!!
BEARS are wild animals of the forest and not “adventure objects”, please respect this on your trip and when encountering one or more bears! Enjoy yourself, but stay in the car and just drive on slowly.
In Romania there are about 8,000 to 10,000 brown bears living in the wild and more and more bears are drawn towards the roads and towns, as the bears unfortunately receive food from some travelers and therefore return to the roads again and again, even with their own offspring.
We understand, it is a special experience … but bears can also be dangerous and, above all, feeding them destroys their natural habitat and possibly even their lives … for a moment of attraction.
We therefore ask you to let the bears … be bears and show responsibility … Do not feed the bears and please do not stop when you see one or more bears at the roadside. This behavior will attract the bear because it thinks it will get food. Leaving the vehicle in such a situation to get a closer look at a bear should NEVER happen anyway. Thank you !
An article worth reading on dealing with bears:
https://www.trentino.com/…/verhaltensregeln-bei…/
It should be mentioned that feeding bears in Romania has now been made a punishable offense. Your vacation can quickly come to a premature end here!

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County, in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.
Built in its current form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, it used materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. The church interior features 15th-century frescoes depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian attire.
Historians suggest the site once housed a Dacian temple for the god Zamolxis, later turned into a Roman temple for Mars. The church’s origins trace back to the 4th century, making it the oldest church in Romania and Southeast Europe.

The village of Viscri (in German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, in Hungarian: Szaszfeheregyhaza) is located in Brașov County, Transylvania.
It lies northwest of the town/castle of Rupea (in German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (in German: Schäßburg). Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the village had about 700 inhabitants, mainly Transylvanian Saxons, plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized both by its fortified church and by the village structure shaped by Saxon farmsteads.
The village was founded at the end of the 12th century by Transylvanian Saxons and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. At the northwestern end of the village stands the fortified church.
In the 12th century, before the arrival of the German settlers, the Székelys (a Hungarian-speaking ethnic group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here. In the 13th century, the church was expanded. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a defensive wall with towers was built.

They are not prepared everywhere in Romania according to the same recipe. Depending on the region and taste of the individual, they also in size vary from one place to another.
Sarmas contains meat wrapped with other ingredients in vine leaves or sauerkraut. Sarmale can be without meat (vegetarian) with vegetables.
We present a special recipe from Moldova with meat filling.
For 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken or a mixture) add:
– 4 – 5 medium onions
– 100 grams of rice
– salt, pepper – one teaspoon each
– Dill and parsley – to taste
– Tomato broth (150 grams)
– 4 tablespoons oil (in combination with chicken)
If the meat is lean, add a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or corn flour to better tie the mixture. Mix the contents well and then wrap it in vine leaves or cabbage, according to your preferences.
Cook for about two (2) hours, placing the sarmale close to each other in a saucepan and adding water. When the liquid in which the sarmale boils is low, add hot water to compensate. Check after the first hour of cooking and then whenever you think it is necessary.
We thank “Mama” Postolache for the recipe and her daughter for work and images.
From the amount of ingredients, about 120 wires are produced. They are usually consumed with sour cream (cream / cream) and hot pepper (chili pepper). Also, depending on the region, white bread and polenta (from maize semolina, similar to Italian polenta) are added.
We wish you good appetite (Bon appetite)

The village of Großpold, in Romanian Apoldu de Sus, is located in the county of Sibiu and is one of the three so-called Landler villages in Transylvania.
The Landler were forced to leave their Austrian homeland in the 18th century due to their Protestant faith and settled mainly in three villages near Sibiu. They have preserved their language and traditional costumes to this day. In Großpold, the typical architecture of the houses has largely been preserved. The two other Landler villages are Neppendorf, in Romanian Turnisor, today incorporated into Sibiu, and Großau, in Romanian Cristian.

Beautiful pictures of the ‘Happy Cemetery’ and the museum / workshop of Sapanta (Maramures County), which we received today from Mr Alexander Laszlo. Thank you very much for this.
The ‘Happy Cemetery’ is located about 18 kilometres west of Sighetu Marmatiei and is one of the most visited sights in the Maramures region.
The crosses, which were painted by local craftsmen, are vivid and predominantly blue in colour.
The idea for this cemetery was conceived in 1935 by the wood sculptor Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has a carved image in the upper part, depicting a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, humorous, short poems or rhymed texts describe the life of the person buried there.

The first German settlers presumably reached the area in 1147. The first documented mention of the city dates from 1191. From 1223, the Latin name “Villa Hermanni” is attested, and from 1241, the German equivalent Hermannstorf.

The village of Dedrad, or Deutsch-Zepling in German, is located in the district of Mures in northern Transylvania.
Until 1944, the village was mainly inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons, who had to flee westwards as a result of the Second World War. Some of them returned in 1945. From the 1970s onwards, most of the Germans resettled in Germany. Today, there is still a small German Protestant congregation that regularly worships in the beautifully renovated church.

Dracului Lake (hell or devil in German) is located in the Cheile Nerei-Beusnița Natural Park, Banat region, Caraș-Severin county in western Romania.
In earlier times, it was an underground lake that came to the surface after a partial collapse of the ceiling of the cave where it was located. It has a size of about 700 square meters, a diameter of 20 meters and a depth of about 12 meters. Its name comes from a local legend that Satan threw himself into the lake after losing a bet with a shepherd.

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Castle, Iron Market Castle in German, Corvinilor Castle or Huniazilor Castle in Romanian, Vajdahunyadi var in Hungarian) is one of the most important non-ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.
https://xn--willkommen-in-rumnien-m2b.de/ | https://welcome-to-romania.com
The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.
After 1440, Hungarian statesman and military commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the ancestral castle of the Hunyadi family. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, Prince Gabor Bethlen carried out another major remodelling of the building. As a result, the castle today is a mixture of different architectural styles.

Wildly romantic for some, hard work with many hardships for others—in the Apuseni Mountains, both come together. Who is happier… everyone must decide for themselves. More does not always mean better… at least not when it comes to one’s own satisfaction.
The Apuseni Mountains are a mountain range in western Romania. They reach peak heights of almost 1,850 meters (highest peak: Cucurbăta Mare at 1,849 meters) and form the northern section of the western Romanian Carpathians. The range has an almost circular shape with a diameter of 130 to 150 km, is bordered by the Mureș, Someș, and Barcău rivers, and is located in the counties of Arad, Bihor, Cluj, Alba, and Hunedoara.

Pictures from May 4, 2025, with a view of Bran Castle (in German Törzburg), the home castle of Dracula
According to the main character in the book “Dracula” by Irish author Bram Stoker, the castle is considered “the home” of this vampire. This is not really true, but from a tourism perspective, Bran Castle is one of the most developed and visited attractions in Romania. Buses bring almost every nationality in the world to this place, especially during the summer months.

The Cheile Turzii (also known in German as Thorenburger Gorge) is a limestone canyon in the Trascău Mountains, located at the eastern edge of the Western Carpathians in western Transylvania, Romania, near the city of Turda (Thorenburg).
The approximately two-kilometer-long gorge is traversed by the Hășdate River, which has carved its way through the limestone. On both sides, the canyon is bordered by steep walls about 300 meters high, containing several caves. Since 1938, the gorge has been under nature protection due to the presence of over 1,000 plant species, some of them alpine. On an area of 176 hectares, around 70 species of birds, fish, amphibians, and some mammals such as foxes, weasels, martens, and wild boars live here.

If you travel on the road (E671) from Timisoara to Arad, you will pass the commune of Vinga (Theresiopolis in German) about 25 km before Arad.
The two churches are very large for such a small community. The Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church, on the left in the picture) and the Roman Catholic Church (Catholic Church, on the right in the picture and in other pictures).
The first documentary mention of Vinga dates back to 1231. After being sacked and destroyed by the Turks, Vinga was resettled in 1737 and 1741 by about 125 families of “Bulgarian-Bavarians” from Cyprovts in western Bulgaria, who crossed the Danube and settled in various parts of the Banat Plain. On 1 August 1744, Vinga was granted the status of a town with a magistrate and various privileges by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.

As soon as the Transfăgărășan reopens in mid/late June, but even earlier in many other regions, you will encounter them again… the brown bears.
First, our BIG REQUEST:
DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!!
DO NOT ATTRACT THE BEARS!!
BEARS are wild animals of the forest and not “attractions”—please respect this during your trip and when encountering one or more bears! Enjoy the moment, but stay in your car and simply drive on slowly.
In Romania, there are about 8,000 to 10,000 wild brown bears, and more and more bears are drawn to roads and towns because, unfortunately, some drivers/travelers feed them, so the bears—especially with their young—keep returning to the roadsides.
We understand, it is a special experience… but bears can also be very dangerous, especially a mother bear with her cute cubs. Mothers know: with children, the fun ends quickly and things can become dangerous very fast. So once again… PLEASE SHOW RESPONSIBILITY AND RESPECT for these animals.
By attracting or feeding the bears, you destroy their natural way of life… for a moment of attraction. Therefore, please let the bears… be bears… do not feed them and do not stop if you see one or more bears at the roadside. This behavior attracts the bears, as they expect to get food. Leaving your vehicle to get closer to a bear should NEVER happen. Thank you!

Carta Monastery (Kerz in German) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in Transylvania, Romania.
It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, almost exactly halfway between the cities of Sibiu and Făgăraș, and is currently an Evangelical Lutheran church.
The exact date of the foundation of the Carta Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A document from Constanta, dated 17 April 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built and granted rights and privileges by its predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th-15th centuries, collected and analysed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the year of the monastery’s foundation as around 1202-1203.monastery around 1202-1203.

The fortress of Brasov (in German Kronstadt) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill (Castle Hill) to repel enemy attacks.
https://kronstadt-erleben.de | https://discover-brasov.com
Throughout its history, it has been attacked and rebuilt time and again, and was even an important point of defense during the First World War. Originally, there was only the fortress tower. From 1630-1631 the outer fortress was built. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and served several purposes over the centuries: it was used as a storehouse, was a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century, and was also used as a fortress.
In the 18th century it was a prison for Turkish prisoners and later, during the plague, a special ward was set up for the sick.

Peles Castle is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of Sinaia, Prahova County.
It was built between 1873 and 1883 by order of King Carol I of Romania and confiscated by the communist regime in 1947. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, Peles was transferred to the Swiss exile, the former King Michael.
The golf windows and the half-wood walls are reminiscent of Hohenzollern Castle, the king’s house. Some of the 160 rooms are now open to the public, and the castle museum contains weapons, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects from the 15th century. – nineteenth century, as well as an orchestra.
