It is situated northwest of the town/castle Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg). In the 12th century, before the German settlers, the Seclavs (a Hungarian-speaking population of eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque-style hall church here. Expansion took place in the 13th century. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a defense ring with defense towers was built.

The Black Church is one of the symbols of the Transylvanian city of Brasov (German: Kronstadt) (German: Siebenbürgen).
It was originally consecrated as the Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary. With the Transylvanian Reformation, which on the part of the Transylvanian-Saxon population was essentially driven by the reformer and later Kronstadt pastor Johannes Honterus, the Catholic dedication was abandoned. The Black Church took its present name after a fire in the town in 1689.
