Râșnov Fortress (in German Rosenauer Burg) is a historical monument and landmark in Romania. It is located in Râșnov (Rosenau), Brasov County, about 20 kilometers from Brasov.

The fortress was built as part of a defense system for Transylvanian villages. The present medieval fortress was probably built between 1211 and 1225, during the reign of the Teutonic Knights of Burzenland.

At present (April 2024), this fortress is still under renovation (images from early January 2022) and therefore access inside is not possible.

Waking up early was worth it. The boat trip at sunrise was WOW.
A lazy day in the campground today, doing a little cleaning, continue tomorrow. A few pics of the lovely Danube Delta, could have done a lot more. Hard to believe that last week there were drone attacks on a Ukrainian port about 25 km away. But we feel very safe here.

The Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County, in western Romania, is the oldest stone church in the country.

It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple, using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. Inside the church there are 15th-century murals depicting Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.

According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of the present church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they built another temple dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origin of this church in Densuș dates back to the 4th century AD and is therefore considered to be the oldest church in Romania and south-eastern Europe.

Just a few kilometers from the city of Oradea, Bihor County, lies Baile Felix, a spa town with internationally renowned hot springs.

The thermal springs in Băile Felix have been in use for about a thousand years. The water temperature varies between 20 and 49 °C. The spa town has a modern cultural center with a theater, cinema, concert hall, library, numerous sports grounds and outdoor swimming pools supplied with thermal water. Cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars, bookshops and shopping facilities of all kinds.

The parks with alkaline sulphur springs are home to the pink-flowered water lily “Nymphaea lothus thermalis”, a plant unique in Europe and a botanical relic from the Tertiary period. It is the landmark of the town of Bad Felix; a neighborhood is named after it: The Water Lily (Seelotus).

Among the baths’ famous guests are Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin and painter Salvador Dali. Today, with 200 springs, Bad Felix is the largest spa resort in Romania.

We followed the journey of “Schnuff” and his biker friends in August 2023 and got/experienced great pictures and many experiences.

The Neamț Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox male monastery and is located in northeastern Romania, about 10 km west of Târgu Neamț, in the county of Neamț and more or less … right next to the church of St. John James of Neamț.

In the Ilfov district, a few kilometers northwest of Bucharest (Romania’s capital), Mogosoaia Castle is located on the shores of Lake Mogosoaia, in the municipality of Mogosoaia.

The castle contains a main courtyard and many buildings, such as the watchtower and the church “St. George” near the courtyard.

The Wallachian Prince Constantin Brancoveanu had the castle built between 1698 – 1702 on the estate of the widow Mogos (from which the name Mogosoaia was later derived) in the Brancoveanu style architecture named after him.
In 1714, when Constantin Brancoveanu and his entire family were executed in Constantinople, the Ottomans confiscated the entire family fortune and turned the palace into an inn (a kind of inn).

In the following decades, the castle was repeatedly conquered, destroyed and rebuilt, until it became the property of George III in 1912. Valentin Bibesco arrived, who was married to the French writer Marthe Bibesco of Romanian nobility. He gave the estate to his wife, and Marthe Bibesco restored the castle extensively.

Petrele Waterfall is also called Maria Magdalena Waterfall by the locals.

It is located in the Pietrele Valley in the Retezat Mountains (Hunedoara county, western Romania), at an altitude of about 1,450 meters.

The small town of Bicaz is located in the Neamt district, on the eastern edge of the Ceahlau Mountains, which are part of the Eastern Carpathians.

Through the deeply cut gorge of the 10-kilometer-long Bicaz Gorge (Cheile Bicazului), whose rock walls partly rise more than 100 meters vertically, a pass road leads in a south-westerly direction to the Red Lake (Lacul Rosu), about 30 kilometers away.

Bistrita is a town in northeastern Transylvania in the district of Bistrita-Nasaud. The Bistrita river of the same name flows through the town, which lies close to the Bargau Mountains, on the slopes of which there is a wine-growing area

Carta Monastery (Kerz in German) is a former Cistercian/Bened Benedictine monastery in Sibiu county, Transylvania.

It is located on the left bank of the Olt River, between the cities of Sibiu and Făgăraș, and is currently an Evangelical Lutheran church. The exact date of the foundation of the Carta Monastery (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown.

A document from Constance of April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built and granted rights and privileges by its predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th-15th centuries, collected and analyzed by Leopold Janauschek, mention the year of the foundation of the monastery as around 1202-1203.

The gorges are located in the municipality of Bănița in Hunedoara County and run along high limestone walls.

They are about 300 meters long and were dug deep into the limestone by water. They can be visited on calm summer days, although waterproof shoes are a must as the gorge path also passes through water.

The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and show how water has eroded the rock. In many places the rocks form a roof, which was formed by horizontal erosion over hundreds of years, depending on the current.

The Cantacuzino Castle was not only the filming location for the “Nevermore Academy” Wednesday series, but it is also one of the most beautiful and important historical buildings / castles in Romania.

The castle’s 60,000 square meter park, framed by its own 1,000 ha of private land, invites you to linger and is today one of the most visited attractions both in the resort of Busteni, and in the Prahova Valley.

Focșani, Fokshan in German, is located in the region of Western Moldova, in the Vrancea district.

After extensive restoration work, the town’s large synagogue is now also used for exhibitions and cultural events. It can be visited daily except on the Sabbath*.

Marienburg in Feldioara (Romanian name of Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the Transylvanian region of the Brașov district.

The castle offers a marvelous view of the surrounding area and the mountains of Brasov (German name: Kronstadt), it is located approx. 20 kilometers away from Brasov on the way to Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (almost 500 meters above sea level).

In 1211 King Andrew II. of Hungary summoned the Teutonic Knights of Hungary in support of the Kumans in the country to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them numerous privileges, including immunity, the right of self-government, and the building of stone fortresses to secure the environment. In 1838, the town of Marienburg ( English name: Feldioara ) was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the castle ruins were renovated and largely rebuilt.

Until World War II, around 800,000 Jews lived in Romania. In the 1950s, there was strong emigration to Israel.

After the political change in 1990, there was another strong emigration. Today, there are still Jewish communities in about 30 municipalities in Romania.

Most of the hundreds of synagogues and prayer houses were destroyed during the communist period. There are still two synagogues in Brasov. The one built in 1901 and located in the city center can be visited every day (except on the Sabbath).

Piatra Neamț (German: Kreuzburg an der Bistritz) is the capital of Neamț County and is located in northeastern Romania. Literally translated, Piatra Neamț means “Stein Deutsch” or ‘Deutschstein’, whereby the word Neamț is an obsolete Romanian word for “German”.

From the train station, a cable car (Telegondola) drives almost 2 km (2,000 meters) to the mountain station on Mount Cozla, at an altitude of 632 meters (632 meters). The trip takes just under 8 minutes and you can already enjoy the wonderful view of the city and the surrounding area.

Piatra Neamt was founded at the end of the 14th century as Piatra lui Crăciun and became a renowned center of arts and crafts after the establishment of a royal court by Stefan the Great, Prince of Moldavia (1433-1504). The town has around 80 to 100 thousand inhabitants and is always worth a visit due to the historic Old Town area.

Bistritz, in Romanian Bistrița, in Hungarian Beszterce, in the county of Bistrița-Năsăud in northern Transylvania, is the capital of the so-called Nösnerland.

The town’s landmark is the Protestant parish church with the highest church tower in Romania (75 meters). The church was badly damaged in a major fire in 2008. Extensive restoration and renovation works were completed this year. From the tower of the parish church, which can be reached by elevator, there is a fantastic view of the city and the surrounding mountains.

Botsch, Batos in Hungarian Batos is one of the seven German villages in the so-called “Reener Ländchen” near the town of Sächsisch Regen, Regin in Romanian, Szaszregen in Hungarian.

In the fall of 1944, all the Germans in the area were forced to flee westwards. Some returned in 1945. Resettlement in Germany began in the 1970s. Today, there are still intact Protestant congregations in all seven villages and in the town of Sächsisch Regen, which celebrate their services in German. All the churches have been renovated and are worth a visit.

We continue to follow the journey of “Schnuff” and his motorcycling friends, who are currently driving through Romania (part 6 of x).

Today (or yesterday) in the municipality of Bazna (German Baassen or Baassen, Ardeleno-Saxon Baußen, Hungarian Bazna or Felsobajom) in the Sibiu district of Transylvania (images mid-August 2023).

The fortified Protestant church of Baassen was built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 16th century. Today, the church and part of the community hostel are protected monuments.

The Palace of Parliament is not only the second largest building in the world (after the Pentagon in Washington), with an area of about 360,000 square meters, but also number one in the Guinness Book of World Records for its total weight.

Among other things, 1,000,000 cubic meters of marble, 3,500 tons of crystal, 700,000 tons of steel and bronze, 900,000 cubic meters of wood and 200,000 square meters of carpeting were used. There are about 1,000 rooms in the palace, not counting corridors, hallways, staircases and 40 elevators.

The building, which dates back to the time of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, is definitely worth a visit – whether you like this “architectural style” or not.

Tismana is a small town in Romanian Muntenia, located in Gorj county, in south-western Romania.

The town is known for the Romanian Orthodox Monastery of Tismana, the oldest monastery still existing in Muntenia.

As early as 1377, Prince Radu II built a monastery here, which was rebuilt in 1495 (as it had fallen into disrepair). The town (since 2004 Tismana is a city) developed around the monastery in the 15th/16th century and is today an important Romanian center of wood industry.

Lake Ochiul Beiului (Ochiul Beiului) is located in the Cheile Nerei-Beușnița National Park in south-western Romania (Caras-Severin county), close to the Serbian border and the villages of Oravița and Steierdorf (in east-west and east direction, respectively).

It is up to 3.6 meters deep and about 15 meters in diameter. The magical blue-green water never freezes in winter, as the lake is permanently fed with water from a spring.

Pasajul Macca-Villagrosse is located in the center of Bucharest (north-west), in the Old Center / Lipscani.

The covered overpass is a historical monument that connects Calea Victoriei and Lipscani Street through the exit of the overpass from Eugeniu Carada Street.

Traditions and customs in Banat, who sees the pictures and doesn’t know the history of the Danube Swabians … would think that they are somewhere in Germany, in the Swabian region. But no, these photos are from Romania.

Pictures from the church feast of the parish of Liebling, located in the Timiș district of the historic Banat region. In the German communities of the Banat region, church holidays are celebrated in the traditional way. On these occasions, the beautiful traditional costumes of the local people are worn. If you travel to Banat from summer to autumn, it is always worth a visit to a church festival.

The village / commune Bârsana (old spelling Birsana) is located in Maramureș county.

Located in a breathtaking landscape, Bârsana has tourist attractions such as the wooden church “The Entry of the Mother of God from the Church”, built around 1720 in the center of the village.

The monastery of Bârsana Monastery, located on the south-eastern edge of the village, was first mentioned in 1390, but was abandoned and demolished around 1800. Today’s buildings on the site were rebuilt in wooden construction at a later date. Today it houses a convent of Romanian Orthodox nuns.

Sibiu at night … a lively city. Many people are still in town at 11pm, you can drink coffee at the many terraces, eat ice cream and even the supermarkets in the city center are open until midnight.

Durau Monastery in Neamț County was built between 1830 and 1835 by several monks with the help of Safta Brâncoveanu and at the expense of three wealthy merchants from Piatra Neamț.

It was built on the site of a convent of nuns founded in the 17th century by one of the daughters of the ruler Vasile Lupu. The first documentary mention of Durău Monastery dates back to 1779.

The coat of arms of Sibiu dates back to the 13th century.

The coat of arms consists of an ancient shield with a red glazed field. Within this field are two silver swords with a golden fist and cross, forming a cross of St. Andrew, pointing towards the base of the shield. The swords bear an open lamellar crown Or. A triangle consisting of three sea leaves (water lilies) and three stalks encircles the sword-blades, and on the shield a stone crown with seven silver towers is enthroned Siebenburgen / Transylvania.

In medieval heraldry, these swords on a blood-red background symbolize the right to impose the death penalty: Jus Gladii Minus and Jus Gladii Majus.

Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Iron Market Castle, in Romanian as Corvin Castle or Huniazilor Castle, in Hungarian as Vajdahunyadi var) is one of the most important non-ecclesiastical buildings in Transylvania.

The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle has many other names (Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvineștilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Piața de Fier, Castelul Negru, Castelul Vajdahunyad, Castelul Hunyadi), which can be attributed to its location or its owners.

After 1440, the Hungarian statesman and military commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the Hunyadi family’s ancestral castle. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, Prince Gábor Bethlen carried out another major remodeling of the building. As a result, today’s castle is a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austrian hands since 1724, and since 1918 it has been owned by the Romanian state. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a number of Romanian and international film productions. The castle currently houses a museum.

Râșnov is about 20 kilometers from Brasov (Kronstadt), on the road to the town/castle Bran.

Râșnov is a small town with about 15 thousand inhabitants. inhabitants, a fortress and a dinosaur park. The castle was built on the limestone cliffs above the town in the 14th century. Râșnov’s dinosaur park is just 200 meters from the back of the fortress (relative to the picture). Nothing stands in the way of a great family day out.

The Caryatid House (also known as the Little Palace) is located on Mitropoliei Street in Sibiu, which is in the historic region of Transylvania.

The doorway of the house is framed by two caryatids*, each placed on a high pedestal and supporting a balcony.

The city of Craiova (Krajowa) is the largest city in the historical region of Lesser Wallachia and the capital of Dolj County.

It is located about 220 kilometers west of Bucharest, in the Muntenia Plain, on the left bank of the Jiu (Șil) River. A Dacian settlement, called Pelendava, existed on the site of today’s town around 400-350 BC. At the beginning of the 2nd century AD the Romans established a camp here. Remains of this Roman fort have been excavated in the urban area of Craiova.

The village of Kleinlasseln (Laslau Mic in Romanian) is located in the district of Mures (Mures) and is a typical (former) Saxon village in southern Transylvania.

The old Protestant churches in the village usually still harbor small hidden treasures. Only a few Germans still live in the village.

This memorial house in Humulești is now a small museum dedicated to the Romanian storyteller Ion Creangă (1837-1889), who was born and grew up in the village of Humulești (today a suburb of the city of Targu Neamt) in Neamt County.

The dating of the house is 1833, the building is a construction of wooden beams with a shingle roof and is on the list of historical monuments. It was inhabited by the descendants of the Creangă family until 1959.

Corbii de Piatra Monastery is certainly one of the oldest monasteries in Romania.

It is located in the village of Jgheaburi, in the commune of Corbi, Argeș County. It was built in a cave complex in 1512, during the reign of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521).

The monastery church is carved into the rock (sandstone). Next to the church, also hewn in rock, is the monastery’s dining hall, a room hewn in rock which, according to tradition, was used by Neagoe Basarab as an open-air courtroom for public audiences. The monastery is located about 400 meters from the center of Corbi, on the left bank of the Doamnei River. The cave church itself was carved into a massive rock wall about 30 meters high and 14.5 meters long.

The settlement was founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order in the 15th century by reconstructing a Romanesque predecessor by building a Gothic basilica. During the fortification with a ring and five defensive towers, a cannon and a pit were built, later filled in, and the church tower was equipped with loopholes. After the destruction in 1658, the church was rebuilt in its old form, but the nave vault was not built until 1775. The Alba Carolina Fortress in Alba Iulia (Karlsburg) was built between 1715 and 1738, during the reign of Emperor Charles VI, as a fortification with seven bastions.

It served the Habsburgs as a strategic point of defense along the military border with the Ottoman Empire. Alba Iulia is located near the highway on the road to and from Sibiu (Hermannstadt). It is definitely worth a visit.

Ardei umpluti (German: stuffed peppers) and our beloved sarmale, but this time all vegetarian, no meat. We had lots of comments on our Facebook post a couple weeks ago asking for a meatless version. Here it is. And, as many wrote then, you can substitute the meat and leaves used to coat the sarmals in a variety of ways.

The village of Großpold, in Romanian Apoldu de Sus, is located in the county of Sibiu and is one of the three Landler villages in Transylvania.

The Landlers were forced to leave their Austrian homeland in the 18th century because of their Protestant faith and settled mainly in three villages near Sibiu. They have preserved their traditional language and costumes to this day. In Großpold, the typical architecture of the houses has largely been preserved. The other two Landler villages are Neppendorf, in Romanian Turnisor, today incorporated in Sibiu, and Großau, in Romanian Cristian.

The nature reserve is located in the eastern part of the Bihor Mountains (Apuseni Mountains, part of the Western Carpathian mountain range), in the north-western part of Alba county and is home to numerous caves, including the Poarta lui Ionele cave.

From Arieșeni, follow DN 75 to the center of Garda de Sus. From there, turn left and after about 1 km turn right again at the first intersection towards Poarta lui Ionele and Cheile Ordancusii. The gorges stretch for 4 kilometers in a picturesque landscape with impressive rock formations that invite you to go for a walk, including the nearby Scarisoara glacier.

Fundata village is located in Brasov county, in the Transylvania region.

Located at an altitude of 1,360 meters, Fundata is the highest village in Romania. It lies halfway between Bran and Rucar, near the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului mountains.

Just 18 kilometers west of Sighetu Marmatiei is the “Happy Cemetery”, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the Maramureș region.

The crosses, which were painted by local craftsmen, have a vivid, predominantly blue color.

The idea for the cemetery was conceived in 1935 by the woodcarver Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has an image carved on the top, representing a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, short, humorous poems or rhyming texts describe the life of the person buried there.

This Serbian Orthodox monastery is located in the village of Mănăstire, part of the municipality of Birda in the Temesch district (German name of Timiș) of the Romanian Banat. Here in Banat, in western Romania, about 20 different nationalities live together.

Since the end of March/beginning of April, storks have been spotted again in many villages in south-eastern Romania and Transylvania.

In 2011, the (second) largest statue of Jesus in Eastern Europe was erected on Mount Gordon in Harghita County, between the towns of Odorheiu-Sequiesc and Praid.

The statue, called the Heart of Jesus, is about 22 meters high, made of iron and stainless steel and paid for by donations collected by the Lupeni village hall.

The statue of the Dacian king Decebal (c. 86-106 AD) is 55 meters high and is the largest / tallest stone sculpture in Europe.

It is located on a rock formation in the Almajului Mountains, on the banks of the Danube, near the municipality of Dubova (Mehedinți district), in the Iron Gates Natural Park (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier).

It took 10 years, a million US dollars and 12 sculptors to make it… and it was commissioned not by the Dacian king himself, as may have been thought, but by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004

The Moskovits Palace (named after the engineer Moskovits Miksa) in the city of Oradea (Bihor County) was built in 1905 by the architect Rimanoczy Kalman jr. designed.

It is a two-storey building with many ornaments with plant motifs and one of the most beautiful examples of the Secession style (a variant of Art Nouveau, which developed mainly in Austria) of that time.

The Moldavian monasteries are located in the Bukovina region (north-eastern Romania) and were built in the 15th and 16th centuries in what was then the Principality of Moldavia.

The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. Many of the buildings date back to the time of Stephen the Great, who is said to have founded a monastery for every battle he won. Eight of the monasteries are World Heritage sites.

What is special about the monasteries on the Vltava are their colorful paintings, which are unique in Europe. The monks also wanted to familiarize the lower classes, who could neither read nor write, with the contents of the Holy Scriptures. Thus, they used the monastery’s interior walls, facades and protective walls to depict scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings and frescoes. They are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

The Protestant fortified church in Petersberg is the only one in Transylvania in which all three enclosure walls have been preserved.

The village was probably founded during the time of the Teutonic Order (1211-1225) and belonged to the Tartlau Hundred. It was first mentioned in a document from 1240. In this year the Hungarian King Bela IV donated the villages of Tartlau, Honigberg, Marienburg and Petersberg to the Cistercian Order. The Order was to receive the tax revenues from these localities; in addition, no building work, works of art or cemeteries could be built, commissioned or consecrated without the Cistercians’ consent.

Many typical Transylvanian Saxon houses have been preserved in this village in Burzenland.

Sinaia is a town in Prahova county, located on the Prahova river valley, surrounded by the Bucegi Mountains.

From Sinaia (altitude above sea level: 767-860 meters above sea level) up to an altitude of 2,000 meters, and in winter there are also several ski lifts operating.

There are many tourist attractions in and around Sinaia, such as Sinaia Monastery, Peles Castle and the smaller Pelisor Castle. The Bucegi National Park, Caraiman Monastery and Cantacuzino Castle in the neighboring town of Bușteni are also close to Sinaia.

The lake and a lodge of the same name are located about 8 km from Sinaia and 10 km (about 2 hours on foot) from the Ialomița Cave.

Peles Castle was built between 1873 and 1883 on the initiative of Carol I, the first king of Romania.

It is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia, in the Prahova district. Just a few meters away (approx. 300 meters) is its “smaller” brother, Pelișor Castle.

Transalpina or “King’s Road”, as the road is also known, is usually open from early/mid-June (depending on snow conditions).

It links the towns of Novaci in Gorj county and Sebeș in Alba county. The 138-kilometer-long road crosses the Parâng Mountains and has its highest point in the Urdele Pass.

Banffy Castle in Bonțida commune (in Hungarian: Bonchidai Banffy-kastely) is known as the Versailles of Transylvania and is an architectural ensemble built by the Banffy family in Bonțida commune, Cluj county.

The core of the ensemble of buildings reflects the Renaissance style, later additions and alterations were made in the 18th century in the Baroque style and in the 19th century in the Classicist and Romantic styles (neo-Gothic gallery from 1855).

The city of Arad was first mentioned in 1078 and has a rich cultural and historical heritage with architectural styles from the 18th, 19th and 20th century.

The Castle of the Transylvanian Wolves is located in Chimindina (Hunedoara county), just 15 minutes from Deva.

“Romania, day 19, the Apuseni Mountains, we pass over passers-by, and so we pass by very original and simple villages, where rural life and crafts still matter. Everything seems peaceful, but we suspect that life here is demanding for the people. Huge stacks of hay are taken from the fields by horse and cart for storage. We visit a market and see a knife grinder, a broom maker and many small shops. A man was selling carved spoons. Tomorrow we visit an ice cave. This is part of the Apuseni Nature Park and contains the most compact underground ice block in Europe, with a volume of 75,000 cubic meters and up to 26 meters thick. Let’s see what we see. We found another great place to sleep, with a few woofers that we fed.”

Horezu Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Muntenia Mică, in Valcea county.

Situated at the foot of the Căpățânii Mountains, a mountain massif in the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romanii de Jos, the monastery is about three kilometers (in a straight line) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (huhurezi in Romanian) nesting in the woods around the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by the then Prince of Muntenia Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714) and completed in 1709. It was a men’s monastery until 1862. After the monks were transferred to Bistrița, nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a listed building.

Situated on a hill, the monastery complex is surrounded by two fortifications. The smaller outer wall surrounds the entire monastery estate with its hermits. The second is formed on three sides by buildings of different heights and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side through a bell tower with a massive wooden gate armored with steel. The monastery church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the center of the complex is 32 meters long, 14 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697. There are several tombs in the vestibule of the church, the most beautiful of which is decorated with marble and has a carved lid, intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, but which never served its purpose and was therefore never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and covered with gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side, opposite the entrance to the church, and was built in 1697. The frescoes in the chapel were created between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

The church / fortified church is located in the commune of Biertan (Biertan in German, Berethalom in Hungarian) in the district of Sibiu in Transylvania.

Biertan is one of the earliest German-Saxon settlements and was mentioned in documents as early as 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterized by a row of houses built around a central square, above which rises the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Evangelical Church A.B.), which fostered the building of one of the largest agricultural communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure of Romania, definitely worth a visit.

The Museum of Traditional Folk Culture in Sibiu is one of the largest open-air museums in Romania.

Situated south of Sibiu, the museum is located in the “Dumbrava Sibiului” forest, on the road linking Sibiu to Rășinari, about three kilometers from the city.

It contains installations of traditional, pre-industrial Romanian folk civilization. Houses, workshops and building complexes are scattered around a lake among the trees of Dumbrăvii Sibiului.

The fortress / castle of Rupea (first mentioned in 1324, German name: Burg Reps) is located near the town of Rupea, which is halfway between Brasov and Sighisoara, in the northern part of the district of Brasov.

Rupea Fortress was a refuge for the population of the surrounding villages from the repeated sieges of the Turks and Tatars. It was built in 1324 during the Saxon uprising against the Hungarian king Carol Robert of Anjou. Later, the inhabitants added three defensive towers and two courtyards to the first building, which served as a shelter. In the first courtyard is a 59-meter deep well, which still carries water to this day.

Our destination was again Vama Veche, the southernmost town on the Romanian Black Sea coast, just a few hundred meters from the Bulgarian border. It is slowly warming up again (30 degrees on April 1) and we are already dreaming of a summer vacation on the Black Sea.

The Romanian seaside stretches for about 70 kilometers and, in addition to Vama Veche, includes Constanța, Mamaia, Mamaia-Sat, Eforie Nord and Sud, Constinești, Olimp, Neptun, Mangalia and several others. There are also long (and secluded) beaches in the Danube Delta region between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe.

Vama Veche is mainly visited by a younger crowd, it’s the party kilometer, so to say, the “Shore” of Romania, with about 3 – 4,000 visitors on weekends and non-stop loud music.

Humor Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox women’s monastery located about 5 kilometers north of the town of Gura Humorului (Suceava County) in northeastern Romania.

The monastery church of the “Assumption of the Mother of God” was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993, together with other churches in Moldova.

Băile Govora is a town in the historical region of Oltenia, consisting of the neighborhoods of Curaturile, Gatejesti and Prajila.

Stavropoleos Monastery is an Orthodox monastery located in the center of Bucharest, the capital of Romania.

It was built in 1724 in the Brâncovenesque style by the Greek monk Ioanichie Stratonikeas and is considered one of the most beautiful and important architectural monuments in the Romanian capital. The church is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Also known as Lake Bulea (in German), it is a glacial lake in the Romanian Carpathians. It is located in the Făgăraș Mountains, on the Transfăgărășan Great Transfăgărășan Highway, between the Negoiu and Moldoveanu Mountains.

The lake is located in Sibiu county and is just under 80 kilometers from the city of Sibiu and about 70 kilometers from the city of Făgăraș.

Sarmele are not prepared everywhere in Romania according to the same recipe. Depending on region and individual taste, they also vary in size from place to place.

Sarmaua contains meat wrapped with other ingredients in vine leaves or pickled cabbage. Sarmal can also be meatless (vegetarian) with vegetables.

We present a special recipe from Moldova with meat stuffing.
To 1 kg of minced meat (pork, beef, chicken or a mixture) add:
– 4 – 5 medium onions
– 100 grams of rice
– salt, pepper – 1 teaspoon each
– Dill and parsley – to taste
– Tomato broth (150 grams)
– 4 tablespoons oil (in combination with chicken)

If the meat is lean, add a few tablespoons of breadcrumbs or cornmeal to bind the mixture better. Mix the contents well and then wrap in vine leaves or cabbage, depending on your preference.
Cook for about two (2) hours, placing the sarm close together in a saucepan and adding water. When the liquid in which the sarm is cooking is low, add hot water to compensate.
Check after the first hour of cooking and then as often as you think necessary.

About 120 sarme are made from the amount of ingredients. These are usually eaten with Smantana (sour cream/sour cream) and Ardei chili (chili peppers). Also, depending on the region, white bread and Mardolina (made from corn grits, similar to Italian Mardolina) are added.

The Voroneț Monastery is located in the commune of Gura Humorului in Suceava County, in the Bucovina (Bucovina) historical region of Romania.

It was built in 1488 by Stephen the Great in a period of a little less than four (4) months to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Vaslui.

The Roman-Catholic Church “Saints Peter and Paul” in Brasov ( Brasov ) was founded in the second half of the 18th century. It was built in the 19th century according to the plans of the architect Karl Joseph Lamasch.

The church building is the only Baroque building in the city, the altar is made of wood and gilded, the stained-glass windows were made in Budapest, and the organ comes from Timișoara. The church houses statues of St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Anna and St. Anthony of Padua

The priest Ignatius Wagensei asked Empress Maria Theresa for support for the construction of this church, and construction began in the summer of 1776. In 1787 the church was consecrated by the bishop of Transylvania, Ignatius Batthyany.

Wildly romantic for some, hard work with many hardships for others, in the Apuseni mountains both meet. Who’s happier… everyone has to decide for themselves. More is not always more… at least not when it comes to your own satisfaction.

The Apuseni Mountains are a mountain range in western Romania. It reaches heights of almost 1,850 meters (highest peak: Cucurbăta Mare at 1,849 meters) and forms the northern section of the Western Carpathians in Romania. The mountain range has an almost circular contour, with a diameter of 130 – 150 kilometers, is bordered by the rivers Mures, Someș and Barcău and lies in the counties of Arad, Bihor, Cluj, Alba and Hunedoara.

Carta Monastery (German: Kerz) is a former Cistercian (Benedictine) monastery in the Fagaras region of Transylvania, Romania. It is located on the left bank of the Olt River between the towns of Sibiu and Fagaras and is now a Lutheran church.

The exact date of the founding of the monastery Carta (Latin: monasterium beatae Mariae virginis in Candelis de Kerch) is unknown. A Constance document of April 17, 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded by his predecessors, built and provided with rights and privileges. From Leopold Janauschek have collected and analyzed Cistercian documents from 13 to 15. The century mentions the founding year of the monastery around 1202-1203.

Carturesti Carusel bookstore is much more than just a “bookstore”. It is located in the historic center of Bucharest and covers six (6) floors with a total area of 1,000 m2.

Rupea Fortress (German: Repser Burg) is located near the town of Rupea (German: Reps), approx. 50 km from Brasov (Kronstadt) – on the road to Targu Mures – and is one of the oldest castles in Romania.

The castle was built in the 11th century and is the landmark of the town of Rupea ( Reps ), which can be seen from afar from the top of Kohalmer mountain ( 578 meters ). It is mentioned for the first time in 1324, when the Saxons fought against the king of Hungary.

If you ever get to Bucharest, you must visit it! Caru’ cu Bere is a famous brewery in Bucharest that opened in 1879.

The brewery is located in the eastern part of the center of Bucharest (Old Center), between Lipscani and Stavropoleus streets.

The dining room on the ground floor is seven meters high and decorated in Gothic style, with columns, stucco ceilings, carved wainscoting and paintings. Access to the other floors is via a carved oak staircase.

The Marienburg Castle in Feldioara (the Romanian name of the village of the same name, Marienburg) is a medieval castle of the Teutonic Order in the Transylvanian region, county of Brasov.

It offers a wonderful view of the surroundings and the mountains of Brasov (German: Kronstadt), is located about 20 kilometers from Brasov, on the road to Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (almost 500 meters above sea level).

In 1211, King Andrew II of Hungary called the Teutonic Knights into the country to support him against the Cumans and to secure the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them numerous privileges, including immunity, the right to autonomy and the building of stone fortresses to secure the surrounding area. In 1838, the town of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) and Ordensburg Marienburg were severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the castle ruins were largely renovated and rebuilt.
