Buziaș is the final destination in the “Destination of the Year 2022” competition in the “Tourist Resorts” category.
Buziaș (in German Bad Busiasch, in Hungarian Buziásfürdő) is a small town in Timiș county in the historical Banat region.
The village is located on the edge of the Silash wine-growing hills and is about 25 kilometers from the city of Lugoj and about 35 kilometers from the capital of the Timisoara district.
On the site where Buziaș stands today, a Roman fortress called Ahihis existed already around 101. Buziaș has been documented since 1320, when it was given to nobles by King Karl Robert of Anjou. From 1718, after 164 years of Turkish rule, Banat was annexed to the Habsburg monarchy, and the Habsburg colonization of Banat began with the so-called Swabian raids. Many Germans settled here between 1782 and 1821.

From late March/early April you can see storks moving around in many, many villages in south-eastern Romania.
Almost every mast, no matter how daring the cable construction (fiber optics for internet, where are you in Germany?), is inhabited with a nest. By early June (photos from 2020) the “little ones” are already quite big and soon we’ll be on the road again…

The fortress/castle of Rupea (first mentioned in 1324, German name: Castelul Reps) is close to the town of Rupea, halfway between Brasov and Sighisoara, in the northern part of Brasov county.
Rupea Fortress was a refuge for the population of the neighboring villages from the repeated siege of the Turks and Tatars. It was built in 1324 during the Saxon rebellion against the Hungarian king Carol Robert of Anjou. Later, the inhabitants added three defensive towers and two inner courtyards, which served as shelters. In the first courtyard there is a 59-meter deep well, which still flows water today.

The Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County in western Romania is the oldest stone church in the country. It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. There are 15th-century murals in the church, showing Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.
According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of today’s church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they again built a temple there, which was dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origins of this church in Densuș date back to the 4th century AD and is therefore the oldest church in Romania and south-eastern Europe.

The monasteries of Moldavia are located in Bucovina and were built in the 15th and 16th centuries in the then Vltava dynastic tower. The monasteries are famous for their magnificent frescoes. Many of the buildings date back to Stephen the Great, who is said to have founded a monastery for every battle he won. Eight are world heritage sites. What’s special about the Vltava monasteries is their colorful painting, which is unique in Europe. The monks wanted to bring the contents of the Holy Scriptures closer to the lower classes, who could neither read nor write. And so they used the monastery’s interior walls, facades and protective walls to depict scenes and parables from the Bible in colorful drawings, paintings and frescoes. They are considered absolute masterpieces of Byzantine art.

„The “Bridge of Lies” is one of Sibiu’s most famous landmarks. Made in 1859 in Friedrichshütte in Hesse, it was here that the first cast-iron bridge in all of Romania (and the second in all of Europe) was built.
There are many legends about the name, but since it was also the first bridge that didn’t stand on pillars, it was called “Liegebrücke”… and the word “Lügenbrücke” wasn’t so far away.

The municipality of Harman (in German Honigberg) is located in the historic region of Burzenland, approx. 12 kilometers northeast of the city of Brasov (Kronstadt).
Hungarian King Andreas II in 1211, Burzenland awarded Burzenland to the Order of German Knights, who settled there, built castles, brought German settlers into the country and established villages such as, among others, Honiberg. After confrontations with the king, the order was again displaced from Burzenland in 1225, but the German settlements remained.

Cheile Turzii (also called Thorenburger Schlucht in German) is a limestone gorge in the Trascău Mountains on the eastern edge of the Western Carpathians in western Transylvania in Romania, not far from the town of Turda (Thorenburg).
The approximately two-kilometer-long gorge is crossed by the Hășdate stream, which has cut into the limestone here. The gorge is bordered on both sides by steep walls about 300 meters high, in which there are several caves. As early as 1938, the gorge was placed under nature protection due to the occurrence of over 1,000 plant species, some of them alpine. Around 70 species of birds, fish, amphibians and some mammals such as foxes, weasels, wild boars and wild boars still live here on an area of 176 hectares.

Located in the commune of Bănița, Hunedoara County, the gorges run along high limestone walls. They are about 300 meters long and have been dug deep into the water limestone. On calm summer days they can be visited, waterproof footwear is a must as the path in the gorges also passes through water.
The height of the rock faces is about 10-15 meters and shows how water has eroded the rock. In many places the rocks form a roof formed by horizontal erosion over hundreds of years in response to currents.
