Râșnov (Rosenau) is about 20 km from Brasov, on the road to Bran Castle.

Rosenau (Rasnov) is a small town with about 15 tds. inhabitants, a fortress and a dinosaur park. In the 14th century, the castle was built above the town on limestone cliffs. The Rasnov Dinopark is just 200 meters behind the fortress (image reference). So nothing stands in the way of a wonderful family outing.

The statue of the Dacian king Decebalus (in Romanian Decebal, c. 86-106 AD) is 55 meters high and is the largest / tallest stone sculpture in Europe.

It is located on a rock formation in the Almaj Mountains, on the banks of the Danube, near the commune of Dubova (Mehedinți County), in the Iron Gates Natural Park (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier).

It took 10 years, a million US dollars and 12 sculptors to create it… and was commissioned not by the Dacian king himself, as one might have thought, but by a Romanian businessman and historian between 1994 and 2004.

Fragment from the history of Sibiu: In 1438, the Turks besieged the city but failed to conquer it. On the other hand, the entire surrounding area was devastated.

As a result of the Turkish threat, three rings of walls with 39 towers and several large gates were built in the city. Thus it became the largest fortified city in the Kingdom of Hungary. Sibiu withstood repeated sieges by the Turks, who never succeeded in conquering the city.

In 1442, the Turks were defeated at the city gates, and the mayor Thomas Trautenberger became a legend. Therefore, in 1445, Pope Eugene IV designated Sibiu as a wall and a shield. Sibiu as a wall and shield of Christianity.

However, armies passing through and setting up camp in front of the city devastated again and again the entire surrounding countryside. Only once, the Hungarian prince of Transylvania, Gabriel Bathory, managed to occupy the town in a simulation, plunder it and drive all the German inhabitants from its solid walls – a bitter lesson that led to even greater vigilance and distrust on the part of the Germans from then on.

Around 1500, Sibiu already had around 6000 inhabitants. During the Reformation, the writings of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon reached the city from 1523. In 1543, the Protestant confession of faith was introduced, as the estates were left free to decide for themselves what they believed. On March 31, 1556, the entire lower town and part of the upper town burned in a fire. Some 550 buildings were destroyed.

Sibiu was the political center of the Transylvanian Saxons and the seat of the Universitas Saxonum, a kind of Transylvanian parliament, which dealt with Transylvanian Saxon affairs until 1878 and was a symbol of the unity and political independence of the Transylvanian Saxons.

The Hunedoara Castle (also known as Hunedoara Castle, in German as Eisenmarkt Castle, in Romanian as Corvin’s Castle or Huniazilor Castle, in Hungarian as Vajdahunyadi var) is one of the most important non-clerical buildings in Transylvania.

The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle bears many other names (Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul Corvinus, Castelul Corvinus, Castelul Corvinești, Castelul Corvinilor, Castelul din Piața de Fier, Castelul Negru, Castelul Vajdahunyad, Castelul Hunyadi), which can be attributed to its location or its owners.

After 1440, the Hungarian statesman and army commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification rebuilt and turned it into the ancestral castle of the Hunyadi family. In the second construction phase, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. At the beginning of the 17th century, further major changes were made to the building under Prince Gábor Bethlen, so today’s castle is a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austrian hands since 1724 and has been Romanian state property since 1918. Apart from being a tourist attraction, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a number of Romanian and international film productions. The castle now houses a museum.

The church is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in Sibiu County, Transylvania.

Biertan is one of the first German-Saxon settlements and was mentioned in documents as early as 1398 (other sources: 1402). Like any Saxon settlement, it is characterized by the cluster of houses around a central square surmounted by the imposing church-church.

Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Protestant A.B. Church), which encouraged the building of one of the largest farming communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.

Lake Cuejdel is one of the largest natural reservoirs in Romania and is located in the Stânișoarei Mountains, in the Gârcina commune, near the town of Piatra Neamț (Neamț County).

It has an area of about 1 km and a width ranging from 20 to about 280 meters. The average depth is 10 meters (maximum depth up to 16.5 meters).

Roșia Montană (in German Goldbach, in Hungarian Verespatak) is a locality in the commune of the same name in Alba county, in the historical region of Transylvania.

On the 1769-1773 Josephine map of Transylvania, the place appears as “Veres Patak” (in Romanian translation “Sângeru [Red] Stream”).

The village is situated in the Rosia Valley, through which the Rosia River flows. The Rosia River is rich in minerals, especially iron, which gives the river its reddish color and the name of the village.

Prislop Monastery is located near the village of Silvasu de Sus in Hunedoara County.

The monastery church dates back to the 16th century. In 1564, the monastery was built by Zamfira, the daughter of Moise Vodă from Wallachia.

In the 17th century, St. John of Prislop lived here. In the 18th century it was a Greek-Catholic monastery. In the 19th century it was almost abandoned and administered by a few priests. Bishop Demetriu Radu restored the monastery in 1901. After 1975 the monastery was rebuilt as an Orthodox monastery with a community of nuns.

Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa was the capital of the Roman province of Dacia.

It is located 40 km from Sarmizegetusa Regia, the former capital of the Dacian kingdom. The city and province of Ulpia Traiana was founded after it was conquered by Emperor Trajan between 108-110. The most imposing building, the amphitheater, had a capacity of around 5,000 people.

137.5 years ago, Timisoara / Temeswar already proved its uniqueness as a city in Europe.

On November 12, 1884, almost 60 kilometers of streets in downtown Timisoara were electrically illuminated with 731 lamps*. At the time it was the record in Europe and second in the world after New York.

* The number of lamps and the number of kilometers are based on different sources, with the same claim on the internet.

** Of course the lamps were smaller than those shown in the picture. This lamp is there only as a souvenir and no longer for the lighting in Timisoara.

Only 18 km west of Sighetu Marmatiei is the “Merry Cemetery”, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the Maramureș region.

The crosses, which have been painted by local craftsmen, are lively and predominantly blue in color.

The idea for the cemetery was born in 1935 and belonged to the woodcarver Stan Ioan Patras. He wanted to create a cemetery, unique in Romania, which would show the life and personality of the deceased in a cheerful representation. Each cross has an image carved on the top, representing a special moment in the life of the deceased. Underneath, short, humorous poems or rhyming texts describe the life of the person buried there.

Târgu Jiu is a small city (approx. 80 thousand inhabitants) in the historical region Muntenia Mică in Romania. It is the capital of Gorj County and lies on the Jiu River at the foot of the Southern Carpathians.

Through the deep-cut gorge of the 10-kilometer-long Cheile Bicazului (Bicaz Gorges), whose rock walls partly rise more than 100 meters vertically, a pass road leads in a south-westerly direction to Lacul Roșu (Red Lake), about 30 kilometers away.

The Muntele Mic massif is a mountain group in the Retezat-Godeanu Mountains, which are part of the Southern Carpathians.

It is situated between the Țarcu Mountains, the Godeanu Mountains and the Retezat Mountains. The highest peak is the Varful (mountain) Muntele Mic, with a height of 1802 meters. It is a small but popular ski resort in Banat, 130 km from Timișoara. There are six (6) slopes with different levels of difficulty: Borlova 1, Borlova 2, Vâlsanu, Nordica, Isai, Felix.

Little Mountain is also popular with hikers in summer and is easily accessible by car.

The city of Galati is located in the south-east of Romania, where the Danube slowly widens into the Danube Delta and flows into the Black Sea.

It is only a few kilometers away from Moldova and also Ukraine. The “Faleza” (German for cliff, but also promenade) along the Danube invites you to stroll and stroll along the Danube all year round. The next town, Brăila, is about 25 km upstream.

Near the village of Dubova (Mehedinți County), in the Porțile de Fier Nature Park, stands the statue of the Dacian king Decebalus (ca. 86-106 AD). It stands 55 meters high, was created between 1994 and 2004 and is the largest/highest stone sculpture in Europe.

The Castle of Lut Valea Zânelor is located about 40 km from Sibiu (in the direction of Brasov). The construction started in 2014, and today the “clay castle”, which looks like it was built for hobbits, is already marvelous and admired by hundreds of visitors every day.

Gura (in German der Mund, here mouth) Portitei is a unique place in Europe, where the Black Sea and the Danube Delta meet. It is situated on a narrow strip of sand between the Black Sea and the Golovița estuary in the Danube Delta and is part of the commune of Jurilovca in Tulcea county.

Initially a fishing village, Gura Portitei (Portita) is now known as one of the most remote (and still relatively quiet) tourist destinations on the Romanian coast. Access is usually by boat from Jurilovca. The area is part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.

Old town / center of Sibiu in beautiful pictures. Sibiu (in Romanian Sibiu, in Hungarian Nagyszeben and in Transylvanian Saxon Hermestatt) is the district capital of the county of the same name in the historical region of Transylvania.

The first German settlers are believed to have arrived in the area in 1147. The first documentary mention of the town dates back to 1191. From 1223 the Latin name “Villa Hermanni” and from 1241 the German equivalent Hermannstorf.

The town of Sighișoara (in German Schäßburg) is located in Mureș County and is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe.

It was founded in the second half of the 12th century by German immigrants, the Transylvanian Saxons. The fortified town of Sighișoara was surrounded by a wall with 14 defense towers, of which nine (9) are still standing.

The most important of these towers is the Stundturm, built in the 14th century to defend the main entrance gate to the town. The tower is also famous for its seven (7) wooden statues, about 80 cm high, representing the pagan gods and the days of the week: Diana (Monday), Mars (Tuesday), Mercury (Wednesday), Jupiter (Thursday), Venus (Friday), Saturn (Saturday) and the Sun (Sunday).

is a glacial lake in the Romanian Carpathians. It is located in the Făgăraș Mountains, on the Transfăgărășan Great Transfăgărășan Road, between Negoiu and Moldoveanu Mountains.

The lake is located in Sibiu County and is about 80 km from the city of Sibiu and about 70 km from the city of Făgăraș.

Hunedoara Castle (in German Burg Eisenmarkt, in Romanian Corvin Castle or Huniazilor Castle, in Hungarian Vajdahunyadi vár) is one of the most important non-religious buildings in Transylvania. The rock castle was built on the remains of a 14th-century fortification and is located in the south-western part of Hunedoara (German name: Eisenmarkt) in western Romania.

The listed castle has many other names (Corvin Castle, Corviner Castle, Corvinus Castle, Corvinesti Castle, Corvin Castle, Eisenmarkt Castle, Black Castle, Vajdahunyad Castle, Hunyadi Castle), which can be traced back to its location or owners.

After 1440, Hungarian statesman and army commander Johann Hunyadi had an existing fortification converted into the ancestral home of the Hunyadi family. In the second phase of construction, the castle was extended from 1458 under King Matthias Corvinus. In the early 17th century, under the reign of Prince Gábor Bethlen, further major changes were made to the building. Today’s castle is therefore a mixture of different architectural styles.

The castle has been in Austrian ownership since 1724 and in Romanian ownership since 1918. In addition to being a tourist attraction, the castle is (and has been) used as a backdrop for a large number of Romanian and international film productions. There is currently a museum in the castle.

The Palace of Parliament is not only the second largest building in the world (after the Pentagon in Washington), with an area of about 360,000 square meters, but also number 1 in the Guinness Book of World Records for its total weight.

Among other things, 1,000,000 cubic meters of marble, 3,500 tons of crystal, 700,000 tons of steel and bronze, 900,000 cubic meters of wood and 200,000 square meters of carpeting were used. There are about 1,000 rooms in the palace, not counting corridors, hallways, staircases and 40 elevators.

The building, which dates back to the time of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, is – whether you like this “architectural style” or not – definitely worth a visit.

The town of Băile Herculane (in German Herculesbad, in Hungarian Herkulesfürdo) is a spa town in the county of Caras-Severin, in the historical Banat region.

Over a length of four kilometers, 16 thermal springs with different mineral composition are used.

Among the monuments and buildings worth seeing are the bronze statue of Hercules (1847), the spa museum with archaeological finds from Roman times, the Roman baths (Hotel Roman on the ground floor), the casino (1913) and the Austrian baths (built between 1883 and 1886 to plans by architect Carl Wilhelm von Doderer).

The city of Oradea (in German Großwardein) is the capital of Bihor county in northwestern Romania. The city was first mentioned as a Roman-Catholic episcopal see in 1080 (document from 1113) and belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. After World War I, Oradea passed to Greater Romania and later back to Hungary. In October 1944 it was recaptured and since then it belongs to the Romanian territory.

Just a few kilometers away is Băile Felix (in German Bad Felix), a spa town with internationally renowned thermal springs. Famous guests have included Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin and the painter Salvador Dali. Today, with 200 springs, Baile Felix is the largest spa center in Romania.

Curtea de Argeș is a Romanian town in Argeș county. It is located on the right bank of the Argeș River, which flows here through a valley of the Southern Carpathians.

Curtea de Arges is one of the oldest towns in Romania. According to tradition, it was founded in the 14th century by Prince Radu Negru, who made it the first capital of the Principality of Wallachia.

Curtea de Argeș Cathedral (Curtea de Argeș Monastery, Curtea de Argeș Cathedral) is one of the most famous buildings in Romania. It stands on the foundations of a monastery and is located about one and a half kilometers north of the city. It resembles a very large and ornate mausoleum and was built in Byzantine style with Moorish arabesques.

Rucăr-Bran Pass, also called Bran Pass, is a mountain pass in Romania that connects the counties of Brasov and Arges. It offers some of the most spectacular natural experiences in Romania, with views of the Bucegi Mountains in the Southern Carpathians. The municipalities of Fundata and Moieciu are on the pass.

The city of Suceava is the capital of Suceava County in northeastern Romania.

It is located in the southern half of Bucovina, northwest of the historic region of Moldova, on the river of the same name.

The village of Viscri (German: Deutsch-Weisskirch, Hungarian: Szászfehéregyháza) is located in the county of Brasov (Kronstadt) in Transylvania.

It lies northwest of the town / castle of Rupea (German: Reps) and southeast of the town of Sighișoara (German: Schäßburg). The village had about 700 inhabitants between the 18th and 20th centuries, mainly Transylvanian Saxons plus a Romanian part of the village. Viscri is characterized by both the fortified church and the village structure, which was shaped by the Saxon farms.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.

In the 12th century, the Seclavs (a Hungarian-speaking population group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here before the German settlers. In the 13th century the church was enlarged. After the first Turkish invasions, the church was fortified in the 14th century and a defense ring with defense towers was built.

The cave is located at an altitude of 1,640 meters in the Piatra Rea Nature Reserve (in the Rodna Mountains), near the Cailor Waterfall.

In the Piatra Rea nature reserve you can find a diverse vegetation with rare subalpine and alpine plant species.

A balmy evening in Bucharest in August 2022 invites us to linger outside the hotel. Another guest just says … “Look, something’s crawling up there” and yes, we see … a praying mantilla. Known from biology lessons and movies and television … but never really seen in real life until now.

Mantids (Mantodea) are an order of insects and are part of the flying insects (Pterygota). They are also often called mantids (Text: Wikipedia).

There is a small lake and forest nearby, and the animals also come (fly) at night to the adjacent hotel. For us it was a very pleasant experience and after a short photo shoot, our model … returned to the next bush.

* A caryatid is a sculpture representing a woman. It is used in architecture in place of a column or pillar for portals and facade articulation.

“Red Lake” is a natural reservoir in Harghita county, in northeastern Romania.

It is located in the Hășmașului Mountains, at the headwaters of the Bicaz River and at the foot of the Hasmașul Mare peak, near the Bicaz Gorge, about 25 kilometers from Gheorgheni and about 30 kilometers from Bicaz (Neamt county).

Banffy Castle in Bonțida commune (in Hungarian: Bonchidai Banffy-kastély) is known as the Versailles of Transylvania and is an architectural ensemble built by the Banffy family in Bonțida commune, Cluj county.

The core of the ensemble of buildings reflects the Renaissance style, later additions and alterations were made in the 18th century in the Baroque style and in the 19th century in the Classicist and Romantic style (neo-Gothic gallery from 1855).

Not to be missed in Brasov is the ascent (hike, approx. 1 hour and 30 minutes) to Tampa Peak, 960 meters above sea level.

Right next to the BRASOV sign, there’s a great view of the city and the surrounding region.

You can, of course, take the cable car if you wish, but on top of the cost, you have to put up with very long waiting times sometimes (weekends).

Want to visit the Danube Delta and at the same time relax, enjoy and pamper yourself. Then this is the place for you.

Located on Mila 23 (mile 23, pronounced 23 miles, so about 37 km from the mouth of the Danube) in the Danube Delta is Paradise Delta House.

The village / commune of Bârsana (old spelling Bîrsana) is located in Maramureș county. Situated in a beautiful landscape, Bârsana has tourist attractions such as the wooden church “The Entrance of Our Lady into the Church” in the center of the village, built around 1720.

The monastery of Bârsana Monastery on the south-eastern edge of the village was first mentioned in 1390, but was abandoned and demolished around 1800. The buildings on today’s site were rebuilt in wood at a later date. Today, there is a Romanian Orthodox convent of nuns.

The Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral is located in Arad, in western Romania. It is the main cathedral of the episcopal see of Arad, in the county of the same name.

The foundation stone of this cathedral was laid by Bishop Timothy at the end of 1991 and was completed in 2006. The church’s five bells weigh a total of 6.5 tons (6,500 kg) and were made by a foundry in Innsbruch, Austria.

The town of Biertan (in German Birthälm) in the county of Sibiu in the region of Transylvania.

It was mentioned for the first time in a document from 1283, and the present Gothic hall church was built at the beginning of the 16th century.

Poetic summer in Timisoara starts with these walks! The 3rd edition of the Poetry Tram is an invitation to the public to take five interdisciplinary rides on June 3 and 4 on the tram designed by artist Dan Perjovschi. The rides offer the opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of contemporary poetry and the city of Timișoara, but also mean connecting musical moments and stories along three routes in the city to create a unique experience. The Poetry Tram is a project of Art Doesn’t Bite.

Follow the Poetry Train! The five (5) urban poetic journeys will focus on five (5) well-known and appreciated poets: Svetlana Carstean, Moni Stănilă, Alina Purcaru, Radu Vancu and Andrei Dosa, who will each read and discuss for two hours, moderated by Raisa Beicu, journalist, content creator and culture lover.

The Poetry Tram has a special non-stop weekend program with the following departure times:

Sibiel (in German Budenbach or Biddenbach) is a neighborhood of the town of Săliște in the county of Sibiu, in the Transylvania region.

The gorges are located in the commune of Bănița in Hunedoara county and stretch along high limestone walls. They are about 300 meters long and were dug deep into the limestone by water. On calm summer days they can be visited, although waterproof shoes are a must as the gorge path also passes through water.

The height of the rock walls is about 10-15 meters and shows how the water has eroded the rock. In many places, the rocks form a roof, which was formed by horizontal erosion with the current over hundreds of years.

“Danube Delta Eco-Touristic Museum Center” is located in Tulcea, the capital of Tulcea county, which includes the Danube Delta.

The museum includes an aquarium with native and exotic fish, also spread over two floors, scenes and impressions of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.

In the heart of the Semenic Mountains there is a place full of marvelous landscapes, an oasis of peace and relaxation. It is the Trei Ape Resort in the village of the same name in Caras-Severin county, about 35 kilometers from the city of Resita. The resort is located right next to Lake Trei Ape, the highest reservoir in the Semenic Massif.

The name Trei Ape, given to both the resort and the lake that has formed in the area, comes from the three streams that flow out of the mountains. Grădiște and Semenic, which meet here to give rise to the Timiș River.

The three-water resort is popular with winter sports enthusiasts, not least because there’s a ski area. In addition, tourists who want to explore the surroundings can take well-marked trails to the Anina or Semenic mountains, but also to nearby tourist villages such as Gărâna or Brebu Nou. Those wishing to stay at the Three Waters Lake can do so in several huts, country houses, guesthouses and a hotel located in the tourist village of the same name.

Ighișu Nou (in German Eibesdorf, Hungarian Szaszivanfalva, Transylvanian Saxon Ebesdref) is a neighborhood of the city of Mediaș in Sibiu county.

Before 1925, the village was called Saxon Eibesdorf (in Romanian Ighisul Săsesc or Ibisdorful Săsesc), in Transylvanian Sauksesch-Ebesdref. The name Eibesdorf comes from the word yew. The village was mentioned for the first time in a document from 1305, when several members of the dynasty of the Counts of Apa divided their possessions, which included Eibesdorf, among themselves.

The fortified church of Eibesdorf was built between 1420 and 1494. The castle complex situated on a plateau is one of the most picturesque in Transylvania. The small bell was cast in 1496, the middle bell in 1556 and the large bell in 1929. The bell tower itself is 34.5 meters high. The mechanical pedal organ has 13 stops and dates from 1775. The altar altarpiece ‘Jesus on the Cross’ dates from 1515, as well as two valuable gilded silver chalices dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Pelișor Castle is located about 300 meters from its “big brother”, Peles Castle, in the town of Sinaia, Prahova County.

The castle was built between 1899 and 1902 by Czech architect Karel Liman and decorated by Viennese artist Bernhard Ludwig. However, in 1903, Pelișor Castle became the summer residence of the Crown Princes of Romania.

Peles Castle and its “little brother”, Pelisor Castle, are just 300 meters away.

Both castles are located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of the town of Sinaia, in the Prahova district.

Bear Cave is one of the most famous caves in Romania. It is located in northwest Transylvania / Romania, about 75 kilometers southeast of the city of Oradea in Bihor County.

The Cave of the Bears (Pietroasa commune, Chișcău village) was discovered by chance in 1975 and presents a world of stalactites impressive by the beauty and variety of its forms. The highlight of each tour is the visit of a fossilized skeleton of a cave bear (Ursus spelaeus). This skeleton is fully preserved and has been there for about 15,000 years.

Lacul Țapului is a glacial lake located at an altitude of 2,130 meters in the National Park / Retezat Mountains in Hunedoara County.

The 383 km national park is located in the high Carpathian Mountains of Romania. Established in 1935 as the country’s first national park, it is located in the Retezat Mountains west of the Southern Carpathians.

The Voroneț Monastery is located in the commune of Gura Humorului in Suceava County, in the historical Bucovina region of Romania.

It was built in 1488 by Stephen the Great in a period of just four (4) months to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Vaslui.

The shoemakers’ tower, first mentioned in documents in 1522, was rebuilt in 1681 after the fire of 1676 and has the shape of a hexagonal prism with unequal sides.

The jagged roof with two observation towers on the south and north sides gives it a distinctive appearance. The stone tablet with the oldest coat of arms of the town and the motto “Nomen Domini, turris fortissima” (in translation: The name of God is the strongest castle), which is kept in the History Museum in the town of Sighisoara (Schäßburg in German), comes from this tower.

After World War II, the appearance of the tower underwent some changes. The windows were enlarged and the entrance modified, as was the external staircase added in later years.

“Moscow Palace” in the city of Oradea in Bihor county, was built in 1905 by the architect Rimanoczy Kalman jr. designed. It is a two-storied building with many ornaments with plant motifs and one of the most beautiful examples of the Condiment style (a variant of the youth style developed in Austria) of this date.

The coat of arms of Sibiu dates back to the 13th century.

The coat of arms consists of an ancient shield with a red glazed field. Within this field are two silver swords with a golden fist and parry bar, forming a cross of St. Andrew, with the point aligned at the base of the shield. The swords bear an open lamellar crown Or. A triangle of three sea-leaves (water lilies) and three stalks encircles the sword-blades. A stone crown of seven silver towers is placed on the shield.

In medieval heraldry, these swords on a blood-red background symbolize the right to inflict the death penalty: Jus Gladii Minus and Jus Gladii Majus.

The church is located in the commune of Biertan (in German Birthälm, in Hungarian Berethalom) in Sibiu County, Transylvania. Biertan is one of the earliest German-Saxon settlements and has been mentioned in documents as early as 1398 (other sources: 1402).

Like any Saxon settlement, it is a string of villages around a central square surmounted by the imposing church fortress. Between 1572 and 1867, Biertan was the seat of the Saxon bishopric (episcopal see of the Protestant A.B. Church), which encouraged the building of one of the largest farming communities in Transylvania around this fortified church. It is a medieval and architectural treasure in Romania, definitely worth a visit.

Cuca is 40 km north of Galati, in south-eastern Romania.

There are two churches here, a larger one (in the middle of the picture) and a smaller one (on the right in the picture), which are used differently depending on the occasion.

Horezu Monastery (also called Hurezi Monastery) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery of nuns located in the historical region of Muntenia Mică, in Valcea county.

Situated at the foot of the Căpățânii Mountains, a mountain massif in the Transylvanian Alps, in the village of Romanii de Jos, the monastery is about three kilometers (as the crow flies) north of the small town of Horezu.

The cries of nocturnal birds of prey (huhurezi in Romanian) nesting in the woods around the monastery probably gave the place its name. The monastery was founded in 1692 by Constantin Brâncoveanu (1654-1714), then Prince of Muntenia, and completed in 1709. Until 1862 it was a men’s monastery. After the monks were transferred to Bistrița, nuns came to the monastery. The monastery complex has been restored several times since 1827 and is a listed building.

Situated on a hill, the monastery is surrounded by two fortifications. The outer, smaller wall encircles the entire property of the monastery with its holy orders. The second consists of buildings of different heights on three sides and a wall to the east. The entrance to the monastery is on the south side, through a bell tower, which has a massive wooden gate armored with steel. The monastery church of Saints Constantine and Helen, built in the center of the complex in the shape of a cross, is 32 meters long, 14 meters high and was built between 1693 and 1697. There are several tombs in the vestibule of the church, the most beautiful one furnished with marble and with a carved lid intended for Prince Brâncoveanu, but which did not fulfill its purpose and was therefore never used. The large iconostasis is carved in lime wood and covered with gold.

The square chapel with an octagonal tower, whose windows are the light source of the chapel, is located on the west side, opposite the entrance to the church, and was built in 1697. The chapel frescoes were made between 1705 and 1706 and are still in good condition today.

The bee stonechat (Merops apiaster), also rarely called the “bee woodpecker” because it is not a member of the woodpecker family, is a highly colorful bird of the robin family (Meropidae). It is particularly common in the Romanian Danube Delta.

Salina Slanic salt mine is located in Prahova county, about 100 km northeast of Bucharest.

It opened to visitors in 1970 and was first mentioned as a salt mine in 1686.

Râșnov is about 20 km from Brasov, on the road to Bran.

A small town of about 15 tds. It has a fortress with a wonderful view and a dinosaur park. Ideal destination for a visit with the whole family.

Count Dracula’s castle* was mentioned in a document as early as 1377.

There are many stories about Törzburg (Bran Castle, Brasov County) and just as many movies have been made about it. You MUST see it, even if – from the moment you arrive – you somehow feel that you remember Neuschwanstein & Co. Bran Castle is by far the most well-developed tourist area in Romania and is also served by buses directly from Bucharest (and, when you’re there, from Japan and China).

*The vampire Dracula is an invention of Irish writer Bram Stoker, based on the person of Vlad III the Impaler, who was voivode of the principality of Wallachia in 1448, 1456-1462 and 1476 and who had the house name/byname “Draculea”.

Carul cu Bere is a famous brewery in Bucharest that opened in 1879.

The brewery is located in the eastern part of the city center (Old Town) of Bucharest, between Lipscani and Stavropoleus streets.

Situated on the ground floor, the dining room is seven meters high, decorated in Gothic style with columns, plaster ceilings, carved wainscoting and paintings. Access to additional floors is via a carved oak staircase.

Cocoș Monastery is located about 35 km from the city of Tulcea and is run by a community of monks.

It is situated in a secluded spot at the foot of a hill, surrounded by the fragrant scent of linden forests. The first documented mention of a religious settlement in the area dates back to 1679.

“Moskovits Palace” in Oradea, Bihor County, was designed in 1905 by architect Rimanoczy Kalman Jr.

It is a two-storey building with many ornate plant motifs and one of the most beautiful examples of the Secession style (a variant of Art Nouveau, which developed mainly in Austria) of the time.

The first German settlers probably arrived in the area in 1147. The first documented mention of the town dates from 1191. From 1223 the Latin name “Villa Hermanni” is documented and from 1241 the German equivalent Hermannstorf.

AKASHA Wellness Retreat is situated in one of the most majestic mountains and untouched nature reserves in Romania. Just around the corner are Bran Castle, Dracula Castle, made famous by the writer Bram Stoker, and the mystical Bucegi Mountains with the natural rock formation Sphinx.

Some call it the ‘village in the clouds’, and indeed it is. At an altitude of over 1,000 meters, the landscape here is a sea of rolling green hills overlooking the Piatra Craiului massif (2,200 meters).

“Red Lake” is a natural dam in Harghita county, northeastern Romania.

It is located in the HăŃșmaș Mountains on the upper course of the Bicaz River and at the foot of the HăŃșmașul Mare peak near Cheile Bicazului, about 25 kilometers from Gheorgheni and about 30 kilometers from Bicaz (Neamt County).

Topolnița Cave is a karst cave in Mehedinți County. It is the fourth longest cave (about 11 km) in Romania: only Vântului Cave, Humpleu Poienița Cave and Hodobana Cave are longer.

The temperature of the cave varies between 8.2 – 10.8 degrees Celsius, making it a relatively warm cave.
As a result, it is a suitable habitat for some animals, including Europe’s largest colony of greater horseshoe bats (bats). Radiocarbon dating has shown that bat guano from this colony has been continuously deposited since 1694.

Mocanita is the name of a narrow-gauge railroad on which steam locomotives still run. The best known ‘Mocănița’ runs along the Vaser Valley in Maramureș county, in the northern Transylvania region of Romania.

Peles Castle was built between 1873 and 1883 on the initiative of Carol I, the first king of Romania.

It is located about 1.5 km northwest of the town of Sinaia, in Prahova county.

Țara Hațegului is a historical and ethnographic region in Hunedoara county, in the southwest corner of Transylvania. It is located near the town of Hațeg, in the Hațeg valley.

The Retezatul Țara Hațegului has been recognized by UNESCO as a World and Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO International Geopark. Since 2016, Țara Hațegului Retezat has also received national recognition, being the third ecotourism destination in Romania certified by the Ministry of Tourism.

Holbav (German Holbach, Hungarian Holbák) is a municipality in the region of Transylvania.

The commune is located south of the mountain of the same name (Zeidner Berg in German). Holbav is about twelve kilometers southwest of the town of Codlea (in German Zeiden) and 20 kilometers from the county capital of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The land of monasteries in Bucovina includes the so-called Moldavian monasteries. The Moldavian monasteries are a group of Romanian Orthodox monasteries in southern Bukovina in Romania. Their construction was initiated in the 15th and 16th centuries in the then Principality of Moldavia by Stephen the Great and his successors – notably Petru Rareș – around the official seat of Suceava.

Piatra Neamț is the capital of Neamț county in northeastern Romania.

The city is located in the historical region of Western Moldavia, on the terraces on the left bank of the Bistrița (Bistritz) surrounded by the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, the mountains Pietricica, Cozla, Cernegura and Bâtca Doamnei. The oldest traces of a settlement in today’s urban area of Poiana Cireșului (‘cherry meadow’) date back to the Mesolithic era (around 12,000 BC).

The town was founded at the end of the 14th century under the name of Piatra lui Crăciun. After the establishment of a royal court by Stephen the Great, Prince of Moldavia (1433-1504), it developed into a renowned center of arts and crafts. The nearby town of Târgu Neamț was the center of a colony of German-speaking settlers in the Middle Ages, hence the name: Neamț is an obsolete Romanian term for “German”.

Marienburg in Feldioara (the Romanian name of the place with the same name Marienburg) is a medieval order castle of the Teutonic Order in the Transylvanian region of Brasov County. It offers a wonderful view of the surrounding area and the mountains of Brasov (German name: Kronstadt), is located about 20 kilometers from Brasov on the road to Sighisoara (German: Schäßburg) and was built on a hill (almost 500 meters above sea level) .NN) high.

In 1211, King Andrew II of Hungary called the Teutonic knights into the country to support the Cumans in securing the eastern border of his growing kingdom. The king granted them numerous privileges, including immunity, the right of self-government and the building of stone fortresses to secure the area. In 1838 the site of Marienburg (Romanian name: Feldioara) with Marienburg in Ordensburg was severely destroyed by an earthquake. Between 2013 and 2017, the castle ruins were renovated and largely rebuilt.

Sovata, a spa town and city in Mures county, also known as the “Pearl of Transylvanian Spa Resorts”, is famous for its lakes, unique in the world.

Sovata has been a European-recognized all-season spa since 1850. The chlorine and sodium lakes – and their mud – have therapeutic properties for a variety of ailments.

The village of Freck (the German name for Avrig), which was probably founded by Transylvanian Saxons as early as the 12th century, was first mentioned in a document in 1364 and is definitely worth a visit. From here you can explore Sibiu, the Kerz Monastery (Carta Monastery), the Făgăraș Mountains and many, many wonderful destinations in the surrounding area. The Brukenthal Palace’s in-house restaurant and historic Café (open daily between 8:00 and 22:00) is also always worth a visit .

The Botanical Garden of Galati (in south-eastern Romania) is one of the most beautiful places in Galati. The first planting was carried out in 1994 and so far the garden “hosts” more than 260,000 trees, shrubs and flowers. With around 5,500 rose bushes and almost 300 types of roses, the rose garden is one of the largest in the region.

In addition to the botanical garden, visitors will also find a natural history museum, aquarium and planetarium. Entrance fee garden, museum and aquarium, adult: 6 lei (approx. €1.25)

The animal park/zoo in Târgu Mureș (capital of Mureș county in Transylvania, Romania) is a very beautiful zoo with many large green spaces for animals.

The zoo has been in existence since 1964 and covers over 20 hectares. Visitors will find about 120 species and over 500 animals in this park, which is always worth a visit, especially for families.

The Palace of Culture in Iasi, which served as an administrative and judicial palace until 1955, now houses four museums under the name of the National Museum Complex Moldova.

The palace has 298 large rooms with a total surface area of about 34,000 square meters and 92 windows in the front of the building and another 36 inside.

Valea Zânelor Castle is located about 40 km from Sibiu, in the direction of Brasov.

Construction started in 2014, and today the “clay castle”, which looks like it was built for hobbits, is already admired by hundreds of visitors every day.

The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the city of Iasi, in northeastern Romania, and is the seat of the Romanian Orthodox Archbishop of Iasi and Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina. It is the largest historic Orthodox church in Romania and is dedicated to St. Paraskeva, the Nativity of Our Lady and St. George.

St. Parascheva, also known as Paraschiva, is a Romanian martyr venerated in the Romanian Orthodox Church and is the patroness of the Moldavian region of Romania. Her commemoration day is October 14, the date of her death in the 11th century. Her relics were brought to Iasi in 1641 and have been in the Metropolitan Cathedral since 1889.

Every year, on the anniversary of her death (and a few days before), 10,000 or more believers from all over Romania and other countries make a pilgrimage to Iasi to honor this day, to pray and to ask for salvation and support.

The Museum of History of the City and County of Brasov (Kronstadt) was founded in 1950 and is located in the former parish hall in the center of the square of the Council or partially in the bastion of the Weavers of Brasov (Kronstadt).

The bastion, defended and maintained by the linen weavers’ guild, was built in two stages between 1421-1436 and 1570-1573. In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were intended for small caliber weapons that could be used through narrow, circular bullet holes throughout the galleries. Two watchtowers were built for the guard, who monitored the town both from a military point of view and from the point of view of observing possible fires.

After the restoration, the Weavers’ Bastion was turned into a museum.

Siriu Lake (a reservoir of the Buzău River) is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Buzău County.

It is located in a fairytale landscape, surrounded by forests with a dreamy view, at the source of the Buzău River.

Bucovina is a historic landscape in the border region between Central, Southeast and Eastern Europe. The southern half belongs to Romania and is part of Suceava county.

The Sphinx (in Romanian Sphinxul) is a natural rock formation in the Bucegi Mountains*, at a height of approx. 2,215 meters in the area.

*The Bucegi Mountains are located south of the city of Brasov (Cron city) on the eastern edge of the Southern Carpathians in Romania.

Alina Maria Monastery (also known as Romanu Hermitage) in Valcea county was built between 2011 and 2014 at an altitude of 1,700 meters on the mountain plateau of Romanii de Sus, where in winter the snow can reach up to two meters high.

It is located about 20 km from the town of Horezu (Valcea region). The monastery was named in memory of the founder’s daughter, Alina-Maria, who died tragically in 2011. The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, St. Great Martyr Dimitrie and St. Elijah the Prophet.

Caraiman Peak is a 2,384-meter-high mountain in the Bucegi Mountains (Bucegi Mountains) in the Southern Carpathians of Romania.

The mountain is located in the eastern part of the Transylvanian Alps massif and is one of the highest mountains in the Bucegi Mountains. It is famous for the Heroes’ Cross monument. In the valley below the mountain is the small town of Busteni, Prahova county.

Tismana is a small town in Walla Wallachia, Romania, in Gorj county, in southwestern Romania. The town is known for the Romanian Orthodox monastery of Tismana, the oldest surviving monastery in Walla Wallachia.

A monastery was built here by ruler Radu II in 1377, which was rebuilt in 1495 (since it had fallen into disrepair). The town (Tismana has been a town since 2004) grew up around the monastery in the 15th/16th centuries and is now an important Romanian center of the wood industry.

Botoșani (Botoshan or Bottushan in German) is the birthplace of many Romanian poets and thinkers. The poet Mihai Eminescu, the composer George Enescu, the painter Stefan Luchian, the mathematician Octav Onicescu and many others were born here.

Botoșani is the residence of the county of the same name, has about 100,000 inhabitants and is an oasis of greenery with many historic buildings, surrounded by the Eastern Crapul and neighboring Moldova and Ukraine.

The lake bears the name of the municipality of Văliug (German: Franzdorf) in the Caras-Severin district, Banat region of Romania. The municipality lies in the valley of the river Bârzava at an altitude of 550 meters, at the foot of the Semenic mountain.
