Located in the commune of Bănița, Hunedoara County, the gorges run along high limestone walls. They are about 300 meters long and have been dug deep into the limestone. On calm summer days they can be visited, waterproof footwear is a must as the path in the gorges also passes through water.
The height of the rock faces is about 10-15 meters and shows how water has eroded the rock. In many places the rocks form a roof formed by horizontal erosion over hundreds of years in response to currents.

Fortified churches in Transylvania – quantities of wood
(25 February 2022)
There are over 160 fortified churches in Transylvania, one of which is Holzmenge / Hosman.
Only the west portal and the arched pillars separating the nave from the side aisles survive from the basilica, which was built in the 13th century. The west portal is a valuable testimony to Transylvanian Romanesque architectural sculpture with numerous relief friezes. Around 1500, the bell-tower of the church was enlarged in wood and equipped with a crenel supported by brackets. In the course of this, the side aisles of the church were removed. The two fortress walls, built in the 15th century, are connected by the gate tower and still show traces of the former battlements and gatehouses.

Fortified Churches in Transylvania – Pretai
(24 February 2022)
There are over 160 fortified churches in Transylvania, one of which is Pretai/Brăteiu.
Only a few remnants of the 14th-century Gothic basilica remain today. Today’s church shows features of the 15th century. The interior of the church has been greatly altered by removing the southern row of pillars, raising the exterior walls and installing a barrel vault. Of particular note are the pillars between the north and center aisles, which have profiled cross-sections and figurative capitals.
In the journey through the valley of the Great Kokel (Târnava Mare), a few kilometers east of Mediaș (MedJugugendbauhütte Pretaiia?), the fortified church of Brateiu appears. It is situated in the middle of the village on the village green.

Dragobete – Valentine’s Day in Romania
(24 February 2022)
“Dragobetele is a traditional Romanian holiday celebrated on February 24 (today). Dragobete was the son of Baba Dochia, who is the main character in the myth about the coming of spring and the end of the harsh winter. Because of his endless goodness, he was chosen as the keeper of love.
The day is especially known as ‘the day when birds are engaged’. This is when the birds start to build their nests and mate. On this day, which is considered the first day of spring locally, boys and girls gather spring flowers and sing together. The girls gather the snow that lies on the ground in many villages and then melt it, using the water in potions for the rest of the year.

(14 February 2022)
Banat is a historic region in southeastern Europe, now part of the states of Romania, Serbia and Hungary. The term Banat derives from the domination of a ban (Serbian / Croatian / Hungarian for Graf / Markgraf).
The train runs daily from Oravita to Anina and is one of the oldest and most spectacular mountain railroads in Romania, which was operated in 1863 The so-called ′′Southeast European Iron Road ′′ passes through 14 tunnels and over 10 viaducts crossing deep valleys. The railway rises from 218 meters altitude (Oravita) to 558 meters altitude (Anina) and bypasses the Anina Mountains passing through the Jitin Valley.

Clean nature in Piatra Craiului National Park
(13 February 2022)
Romania is one of the most diverse countries in Europe in terms of flora and fauna. The flora and fauna is original and diverse, and as well as bears (two thirds of Europe’s bear population live in the forests here), with a bit of luck you might see wild boars, foxes and owls during the day. The experience of meeting humans in this region or seeing a wild boar’s tracks on a tree, bear tracks in the grass, a young bear or small Ural owls is unforgettable.
These pictures (autumn 2020) were taken in Piatra Craiului National Park (German: Königstein, counties Brasov and Arges) by Mr. Udo Krauss, who made them available to us. Thank you for this, Mr. Krauss works as a tour guide and leads small groups on day or multi-day tours in this area (if you are interested: Mr. Krauss speaks German and can be contacted at carpatmountains@gmx.de).
Important information: Please note that an “encounter” with a wild bear can be very dangerous. Never attempt to lure these animals (even from the side of the road in your car) and only hike in the woods with experienced tour guides.
