Deva Castle
(26 January 2022)
In the north of Deva (German: Diemrich), the ruins of Deva Castle (also Diemrigher Castle, the Romanian Deva Fortress) stand on a 371-meter-high volcanic cone, which can be reached on foot or by a 278-meter-long elevator
The castle was mentioned for the first time in 1269 as Stephan V. King of Hungary in a privilege to the Counts of Câlnic called “Deva Royal Castle”.
In 1307, the Bavarian Duke Otto was imprisoned in the castle by the Transylvanian ruler Ladislau. Since 1321, it and its surroundings have been the estate of the Hungarian King Carol I. The royal and princely castle became the property of Jan Hunyadi in the 15th century. In 1579, the Transylvanian Saxon Franz Hertel, alias Franz Davidis, died here and was sentenced to life imprisonment. After the crusades of the Kuruks from 1687 to 1706, the castle was conquered by the troops of Emperor Charles VI. occupied and renovated in 1752. An attempt by insurgents from the Horea Uprising in November 1784 to take the castle failed. After a visit by Emperor Franz I in 1817, the castle was renovated again. After the castle was partially destroyed in 1849 due to an explosion of the gunpowder supply, it was abandoned and not rebuilt.

Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș
(3 January 2022)
The Church of St. Nicholas in Densuș (Demsdorf), Hunedoara County in western Romania is the oldest stone church in the country. It was built in its present form in the 13th century on the site of a 2nd-century Roman temple using materials from the Dacian fortress of Sarmizegetusa. There are 15th-century murals in the church, showing Jesus in traditional Romanian clothes.
According to Romanian historians, there was once a Dacian temple on the site of today’s church, which was built for the god Zamolxis. Later conquered by the Romans, they again built a temple there, which was dedicated to the god Mars. Given its later prehistory, the origins of this church in Densuș date back to the 4th century AD and is therefore the oldest church in Romania and south-eastern Europe.
